Nepotism: Acting, direction, production, music: Divya Khosla Kumar tried it all with T-Series

·3-min read

There’s an interesting tug of war going on between singer Sonu Nigam, and T-series owner Bhushan Kumar, that’s keeping netizens entertained and occupied during these long boring days.

The already intensified situation took an interesting turn when Bhushan Kumar’s wife, Divya Khosla Kumar jumped in to defend her producer husband. Asserting that 80% of the artists working with T-series are industry outsiders, Divya made a failed attempt at establishing that T-series doesn’t believe in nepotism.

Early days of modelling

The irony is, standing in front of the camera and reprimanding Sonu Nigam, Divya herself is the biggest manifestation of the nepotism promoted and upheld by T-series. As far as memory holds up, Divya was first seen in a Falguni Pathak music video about 20 years ago, and then she was roped in T-series’ original, Kabhi Yadoon Mein Aaun by Abhijeet in 2003. This marks the glorious beginning of the model with T-series on and off-camera.

Big screen debut with big stars

In 2004, Divya made her silver-screen debut with the Akshay Kumar-Amitabh Bachchan starrer Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Sathiyon, which failed to record any box-office success despite its resounding star cast. Here’s something interesting: the music of the movie was sold by T-series.

Marrying T-Series, err, Bhushan Kumar

Two months after its release, in February 2005, Divya Khosla tied the knot with T-Series honcho, Bhushan Kumar. It was quite a surprise because there weren’t a lot of media reports about their romance; recently many entertainment sites have been narrating the adorable love story of the Music mogul and the fresh actress, and it does sound like one of the tales Bollywood romantics are made out of. In 2011, the couple welcomed their bundle of joy.

The model-turned-actress had retired from show-biz, or so we thought. Cine-goers and music-video lovers had forgotten her – not that it was too difficult – when she decided to show up all of a sudden after a whole decade.

Try out film direction

In 2014, her name flashed on the silver screen again, and she was now a director. Her directorial debut, a coming of age movie, Yaariyan, made under the banner of T-Series Super Cassettes Industries earned good collection at the box office. Her second directorial, Sanam Re, could only make a marginal profit. But none of these movies added any artistic value to Bollywood. While the script of the first one makes SOTY 2 look like a cinematic gem, the latter was panned big time by critics.

Try out film production

Divya now decided to switch profession and ventured out in movie production. Her experiment gave Ranbir Kapoor the biggest flop of his career, Roy (2015).

Last year she presented to us Khandani Shafakhana (2019), Batla House (2019), and Marjaavaan(2019); barring Batla House, the other two were box-office disasters. She is now gearing up for Bhuj: The Pride of India, all set to release in August this year.

Try out acting, again

In 2017, the Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon actress produced and acted in a short film, Bulbul just to remind us what a non-actress she is. She would be showcasing her acting chops in Bhushan Kumar’s production Satyamev Jayate 2 again, just in case the point made in the previous statement has not been established enough.

Back to Square 1

After wandering through all avenues of movie-making, she returned to music videos. She picked the erstwhile hit of T-series, Kabhi Yaadon Mein Aaun, had it sung by a female singer, and became the face of the remix on screen. She repeated the same formula with Falguni Pathak’s iconic Yaad Piya ki Aney Lagi. Some creativity there!

Master of none?

Divya Khosla Kumar has done it all, all, but under her husband’s banner. Now if she is multi-talented or a privileged Jack of all trades, is for the public to decide.
