14th Mumbai Film Festival (MFF) will honor the veteran actress and iconic film star and Padma Bhusan recipient Waheeda Rahman with its Lifetime Achievement Award for an Indian personality. The Chairman of the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) the noted Indian filmmaker Mr. Shyam Benegal announced this during the MFF's curtain raiser press conference held at the Experimental Theater of the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) on 24 September, 2012.
Waheeda Rehman is a living legend and was one of the most well-known and iconic stars of the golden era of Indian cinema of late fifties, sixties and seventies having acted in highly successful and critically acclaimed films like C.I.D, PYAASA, KAAGAZ KE PHOOL, SAHIB BIBI AUR GHULAM, CHAUDHVIN KA CHAND, BAAT EK RAAT KI, KOHRA, GUIDE, TEESRI KASAM, MUJHE JEENE DO, DIL DIYA DARD LIYA, AADMI, PATTHAR KE SANAM, RAM AUR SHYAM NEEL KAMAL, RESHMA AUR SHERA, PREM PUJARI, and many others. She has won numerous awards including Filmfare, and honored by the Government of India with Padma Shri, and Padma Vibhushan. She continues to act in films even today apart from actively participating in social work through various NGOs.
The curtain raiser was also attended by the other members of the MAMI's board of trustees Amit Khanna, Ramesh Sippy, and Sudhir Mishra along with the festival director Srinivasan Narayanan, representatives of the sponsoring organizations Sanjeev Lamba CEO, Reliance Entertainment, and Sanjay Rishi, President, American Express, India. Representatives from various consulates and dignitaries from the Indian Entertainment industry were also present in large numbers.
The 14th MFF runs through 18-25 October 2012. It is sponsored by Reliance Entertainment and American Express and supported by NCPA, Trident Hotels, Inox, Cinemax, and Bright Outdoor, with technical support from Real Image, Barco, and Dolby.
