Known for his 'Average Joe' roles and underplay, Amol Palekar completed his post-graduation in Fine Arts from the Sir JJ School of Arts, Mumbai and started his career as a painter. He also dabbled in Marathi experimental theatre with Satyadev Dubey before starting his own theatre group named 'Aniket'.
As a film actor, Amol made his debut with the Marathi film 'Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe', directed by Satyadev Dubey. Palekar's tryst with Hindi cinema began with Rajnigandha, directed by Basu Chatterjee and Palekar acted in a few more Hindi films like Chhoti Si Baat, Gol Maal and Naram Garam. The Utpal Dutt-Amol Palekar starring comedy Gol Maal is still considered one of the finest comedy films in Indian cinema and Palekar went on to bag the Filmfare Best Actor Award for the film.
Palekar also directed movies like Thoda Sa Rumani Ho Jaaye, Daayraa, Paheli and Quest, an English film that won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in English.
