Bollywood box-office report of the week

By Abid, Glamsham Editorial

It is going to be another over crowded week at the box-office with Saurabh Varma's MICKEY VIRUS, the Vir Das starrer SOOPER SE OOPER, Rajeev Khandelwal's ISHK ACTUALLY along with AMDAVAD JUNCTION, BULL BULBULL BANDOOK, WAKE UP INDIA and (yes indeed!) HUFF! - IT'S TOO MUCH! Coming to the prospects, obviously with so many releases the business will get divided, though the front runner is going to be MICKEY VIRUS, as it has bright chances of being lapped up by the campus crowd.

After a good opening day (around 13 crore), Anthony D'Souza's Akshay Kumar starrer, BOSS, could not maintain the same level of collection, barring the single screens. The problem was with the multiplexes that hovered around the 50 percent mark. Still, the 5-day extended weekend saw BOSS netting a decent 40 crore. As things stand, the film will get good returns from the single screens of the 'B' and 'C' centres while multiplexes will be ordinary. Still, most of the distributors will make some profit or break even. BOSS is decent in the overseas grossing $2m with and#163; 235,000 from UK (five days -15 to19 October) and $185,000 from the US during the opening weekend (17-19 October).

The other film of the week, Hansal Mehta's SHAHID (which released on Friday), got a lot of critical praise and positive feedback. However, due to lack of screen space, the film could not perform to its full potential, despite a day wise escalation, and ended up netting 2 crore during the opening weekend.

After a creditable opening weekend (5 crore), Faraz Haider's Sharman-Soha starrer, WAR... CHHOD NA YAAR, had to make way for Akshay Kumar's BOSS, Wednesday onwards. During the opening week the film collected 85 lakhs from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 30 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 4.50 lakhs from Surat, 7 lakhs from Baroda, 1.50 lakhs from Rajkot, 20 lakhs from Pune, 3.50 lakhs from Nasik, 2 lakhs from Goa, 1.75 lakhs from Belgaum, 85 lakhs from Delhi city, 15.50 lakhs from Noida, 12.55 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 4.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 10 lakhs from Lucknow, 2 lakhs from Agra, 3 lakhs from Allahabad, 17 lakhs from Gurgaon, 3 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.50 lakhs from Panipat, 5.25 lakhs from Chandigarh, 1.75 lakhs from Jalandhar, 1.75 lakhs from Ludhiana, 1 lakh from Bhatinda, 25 lakhs from Calcutta, 2.50 lakhs from Siliguri, 1.50 lakhs from Dhanbad, 1.10 lakhs from Ranchi, 1.50 lakhs from Bhubhaneshwar, 1.75 lakhs from Guwahati, 5.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 2 lakhs from Raipur, 10 lakhs from Indore, 2 lakhs from Gwalior, 4.25 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 30 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 1 lakh from Bikaner, 3.25 lakhs from Kota, 3.50 lakhs from Udaipur, 10.50 lakhs from Hyderabad, 1 lakh from Aurangabad (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 15 lakhs from Bangalore, 1.15 lakhs from Mangalore, 1.15 lakhs from Visakhapatnam and 1 lakh from Kochi. Netting a decent 6 crore during the opening week, WAR... CHHOD NA YAAR ends up as a below average fare.

The other release of the week same week, BAAT BANN GAYI, barely managed 1 crore during the opening week and is a washout.

Meanwhile post a below par first week, Abhinav Kashyap's BESHARAM crashed in the second as it collected 30 lakhs from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 10 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 4.25 lakhs from Surat, 3.25 lakhs from Baroda, 2 lakhs from Rajkot, 7.50 lakhs from Pune, 2 lakhs from Nasik, 1.50 lakhs from Goa, 1.15 lakhs from Belgaum, 45 lakhs from Delhi city, 7 lakhs from Noida, 6.35 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 4.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 9.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.75 lakhs from Agra, 3 lakhs from Allahabad, 5.65 lakhs from Gurgaon, 2.15 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.50 lakhs from Panipat, 3.15 lakhs from Chandigarh, 1.15 lakhs from Jalandhar, 1.75 lakhs from Ludhiana, 20 lakhs from Calcutta, 3.25 lakhs from Siliguri, 3.15 lakhs from Dhanbad, 1 lakh from Ranchi, 1.10 lakhs from Guwahati, 4 lakhs from Nagpur, 3.50 lakhs from Jabalpur, 3.50 lakhs from Raipur, 10 lakhs from Indore, 2.25 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 2.75 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 15 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 1.50 lakhs from Bikaner, 2.50 lakhs from Kota, 2.75 lakhs from Udaipur, 2.15 lakhs from Hyderabad and 10 lakhs from Bangalore. Adding another 4 crore, the Ranbir Kapoor starrer, BESHARAM, has netted 61 crore in two weeks from India and is a box-office failure, though the losses will not be substantial (for the producers) as good non-theatrical rights are already in! BESHARAM has also disappointed in the overseas grossing and#163;385,000 from UK and $575,000 from the US till the third weekend (17-19 October).

Concluding with Ritesh Batra's, THE LUNCHBOX, the film is ending it's impressive rock steady run by adding another 75 lakhs, thus netting 21.25 crore in four weeks from India. The Irrfan-Nawazuddin starrer ends up as a semi-hit, a great achievement indeed!
