Is the pairing of Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra going to emerge as the new lead pair of Hindi cinema? Yash Raj Films banner, especially under the baton of Aditya Chopra have packaged their products in such a manner that they have given a hit pairing after certain interregnum. It all started with DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE which gave one of the all time romantic hit pairs in the form of Shahrukh Khan and Kajol that ever graced the Hindi film screen. Even after more than a decade when they paired again in MY NAME IS KHAN same kind of chemistry could be seen igniting the screen.
This pairing was followed by the pairing of Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma which injected an element of spunk on the screen and the positive vibrancy that the pair created through BAND BAAJA BAARAAT set the box office on fire, as both the characters played each other by the rules of the game, fire by fire, ice by ice. It was done in the same manner with DDLJ as well. One could say that the brief given to the writers in formulating these characters was not to etch it out factoring in the respective genders, but to make it gender neutral and develop it in such a manner that both the characters get equal prominence.
Now again with ISHAQZAADE history seems to be repeating itself, as the chemistry displayed by Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra on the screen indeed follows in the pattern of the chemistry that was created in DDLJ and BBB. There is an element of brusqueness in the way both Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra deal with each other, whether in terms of exchanging the expletives, in brandishing the guns, or in being involved in a chase. The icing on the cake is the manner in which Parineeti Chopra kisses Arjun Kapoor on screen, by closing his eyes and then planting the kiss, again showing an element of assertion while entering into relationship.
The point of contrast from BBB and DDLG also lies in the fact that the characters that have been etched out in ISHAQZAADE belong to a small town, and underline the aspirations of small town characters who want to enter into relationships in their own way. Indeed the element of surreptitiousness is the hallmark of the relationship between a boy and a girl and that is what is brought out succinctly through the character portrayals of Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra.
It is after a long time that a lead pair in Hindi cinema has been situated in a small town with ISHAQZAADE. For Yash Raj films, it indeed is a long time as the last time when they situated a romantic film in a small town with a twist was in BUNTY AUR BABLI, which again was a huge commercial success. Another reason for success of this pair lies in the fact that they are not presented in designer clothes but in clothes that the common man wears and take it or leave it, it indeed is a point of connect with the character.
Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor are going to rule the roost, the only caveat being that they should not pitch themselves into the urbane slots which makes it difficult for an aficionado of cinema from a small town to identify with.
