Begum Samru, Tigmanshu Dhulia's biopic, was first offered to Kareena Kapoor and then, to Vidya Balan. However, both the recently-married actresses were hesitant to take on the role, owing to its sexual content.
Dhulia was quoted saying that the film is set in the 1840s and that it will be based on a Hindi novel. He also said that he will approach an international studio so that he does not have to face any censor issues in terms of satellite rights. He also revealed that Kareena and Vidya were uncomfortable with the script.
Speaking about the story, he said that the lead actress will be a begum, not a nautch girl and that she will woo four men before falling in love with one of them and that's when the trouble will begin. Dhulia remains reluctant to tone down the script as he feels it would take away from its authenticity.
