Ashutosh Gowariker's KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY with Abhishek Bachchan hadn't done well at the box office. However CHITTAGONG, which is based on the same real story (an uprising in the times of British Raj involving 60 boys and girls and led by a school-teacher), is finding rave reviews coming its way in its special screenings. So much so that even Amitabh Bachchan was compelled to state it as 'a moving touching experience, sensitively shot and enacted.'
Now this indeed meant a lot for the team of CHITTAGONG since all was not well two years back when Anurag Kashyap had openly shared his displeasure about KHELEIN HUM.... being given preference over CHITTAGONG, which was ready for release at that time. However the film's lead actor Manoj Bajpayee wants to let bygones be bygones and doesn't wish to revisit the past. He also defends Ashutosh Gowariker whose KHELEIN HUM... hadn't met with a favourable response.
"I haven't seen his film but no one can deny that Ashutosh Gowariker is a very good director," says Manoj, "Sometimes one's efforts don't fall in place but then you can't crucify a director for years. Don't forget that the same director has given us LAGAAN and SWADES so why not talk about those films instead of continuing to hammer him for that one film that went wrong for him."
Continuing in the same vein, he adds, "Did he make the film to go the wrong way? Nahi naa! He wanted to make a good film but then it happens to the best of us that our plans don't work. It is part and parcel of this business."
Meanwhile plans for CHITTAGONG indeed seem to be working, what with even Shahrukh Khan coming back impressed and calling it as a 'a delightfully intense film'. Now here is hoping that after PAAN SINGH TOMAR, VICKY DONOR, KAHAANI and OMG - OH MY GOD, CHITTAGONG turns out to be yet another 'different' film that does wonders with audience and box office alike
