The mystery concept car Mercedes-Benz has been teasing for the past couple of days has turned out to be this stunning supercar concept, designed for the upcoming Gran Turismo 6 video game. It’s called the “AMG Vision Gran Turismo”, and according to Mercedes it presents a vision for the supercar of tomorrow. From the video game to the studio to the live debut at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, the new conceptual supercar turns heads with its sleek, futuristic curves.

The project was actually started because of a challenge put forward by Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi. He asked design studios from all across the globe to come up with a concept using the theme “Vision Gran Turismo”. A handful of these, including the AMG Vision Gran Turismo, were selected to be transferred to the virtual world where they will be available in Gran Turismo 6 through online updates.
But for Mercedes, the challenge was also an opportunity to explore future design. For the German automaker, future design looks to contain extreme proportions, sensual contours and a high-tech quality. Signature styling elements for the brand are also present, including a long hood, compact greenhouse and broad shoulders.
The cabin’s design continues the raw, performance theme; in fact, it has been inspired by a Formula One race car’s cockpit. It's said to feature a pair of bright red sport seats that form part of the structure. The dashboard has been designed in the form of two gullwing doors which are positioned on each side of the steering column. As a result the actual doors themselves, also gullwings, appear to be an extension of the instrument panel. Finally, the steering column visibly penetrates the firewall to the engine compartment, creating a visual connection between the driver and the heart of this supercar, a hand-built AMG V-8.
The engine delivers a claimed 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, which is the same rating as the twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 in the latest S63 AMG. However, on the concept, the exhaust gasses exit from eight individual tail-pipes. And just for Gran Turismo 6, AMG’s sound specialists have created a powerful, sonorous exhaust note.
Performance should be scintillating given the fact that the concept weighs just 3,053 pounds, made possible due to its lightweight aluminum spaceframe structure which also incorporates plenty of carbon fiber.

Handling the design of the concept was a team of designers made up of staff based at Mercedes styling studios in Sindelfingen, Germany as well as in Como, Italy and Carlsbad, California. The world debut of the concept took place this weekend at the opening of a new Mercedes R&D center located in Sunnyvale, also in California.
When might we see a design similar to that of the AMG Vision Gran Turismo on a production Mercedes? The automaker’s upcoming sports car, the 2015 AMG GT, already appears to share some similarities with the striking concept, albeit in toned down form. We suspect elements will also filter across to regular Mercedes lineup as well.
