Mitsubishi Delaying New Evo, Focusing on EVs

If you thought Mitsubishi still had a glimmer of hope left…nope. The Lancer Evo, the last of the desirable Mitsubishis in the US market, is set to be killed off, and likely not replaced for some time. This news is according to Motoring.com.au.

Why is Mitsubishi holding off on a new Evo though? According to product chief, Ryugo Nakao, the automaker needs to make sure that future vehicles — yes, even the Evo — are up to par with CAFE emission standards. As of now, that’s not the case.

“When the right timing comes, when we have the right technology…we would consider that in future,” said Nakao in a recent interview. “At this moment, we have to concentrate on SUV, PHEV and EV.”

Currently, Mitsubishi is amidst partnership with Renault-Nissan in furthering range development and building new, mainstream platforms. A new Lancer/Evo is not part of that formula. We’ll wait and see how this one pans out…
