Ford unveiled some of its latest safety and fuel-saving technologies and showed off cues to a bolder, athletic design direction in its Edge Concept midsize crossover (CUV) during recent press previews at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.
The Edge, which debuted as a 2007 model in 2006, has been technologically upgraded and redesigned as a concept that features the most advanced, automated driving technologies, including self-parking and obstacle-avoidance systems that are still under development at Ford.
In describing the Edge Concept, Ford says that its styling is athletic and sleek with a three-bar grille that is connected to LED headlamps, giving a premium finish, along with a muscular and compact appearance. The exterior and interior design has a premium feeling and appearance, Ford says.
The Ford Edge Concept features an array of advanced features to make the vehicle smarter and safer, according to the automaker. Automated driver-assist technologies that Ford is working on or already offers in some of its models are incorporated in the Concept. These technologies include:
- Active park assist for parallel parking with the use of sensors and the steering system.
- Lane-keeping system with a camera that can scan the road surface for lane markings and keep the vehicle from drifting by alerting the driver with vibration through the steering wheel.
- Adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support use radar to detect moving vehicles in front and modify speed.
- Blind-spot information system also uses radar sensors to monitor the space next to and just behind the vehicle with a warning light in the mirror.
Ford's Edge Concept also features a more fuel-efficient 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine and start/stop technology with Active Grille Shutters to promote better gas mileage. To further improve efficiency, the Edge Concept has air curtains positioned on the lower part of the fascia to guide airflow.
The interior cockpit has an open and airy feeling, according to Ford, and is designed to provide a premium environment with a leather-wrapped and hand-stitched instrument panel; 10-inch touch-screen display with MyFord Touch; and a unique gear shifter and steering wheel, among premium elements.
Copper is used as an accent color in the cabin's carpet, instrument panel and other areas of the vehicle as well as to complement the Copper Flame exterior paint color. The vehicle's leather seats have a perforation pattern and premium stitching.
Currently, the Ford Edge is the second-best selling model in the midsize CUV segment, while Ford's Explorer is the segment sales leader, according to manufacturer-reported sales numbers tracked by J.D. Power and strategic partner LMC Automotive. During the first 10 months of 2013, Edge sales were 108,270 units, up from 105,393 unit sales in the same period of 2012.
