February seems to be the month of festivals, with celebrations of all sorts taking place around the world. From food and wine to art and music—with the odd carnival and derby thrown in—we bring you a list of 10 exciting events taking place next month.
What: Kala Ghoda Festival Where: Mumbai, India When: 1 to 9 February 2014 Why: A multicultural festival that has been a Mumbai tradition for years, the Kala Ghoda Festival has an extensive schedule of 350 programs spread out over nine days. While you check out the various music, theatre, dance and street performances they have planned, your kids can participate in the workshops that will be conducted at Kitab Khanna. What: Indian Derby Where: Mumbai, India When: 2 February, 2014 Why: Whether it’s the excitement of the racing horses, the thrill of betting or the chance to rub shoulders with the who’s who of Mumbai (and check out their outrageously fashionable hats!), the Indian Derby promises to be an exciting event. What: Festivale Where: Launceston, Tasmania When: 7 to 9 February 2014 Why: Who doesn’t love great food and booze? Head down south for the annual Festivale and engage with some of Tasmania’s biggest names in food and wine. As you lounge under the massive elm trees of Launceston’s picturesque City Park in between meals, check out the shows by international street artists that they have lined up. The Space Cowboy, a Guinness World record-holding stuntman, the Strong Lady, a charming circus performer, and The Birdmann, a comedian and character performer, are just some of the performers you can expect. What: Art Chennai Where: Chennai, India When: 8 to 16 February 2014 Why: This year’s festival will be based on the theme ‘Environment, heritage and conservation,’ with modern and contemporary art works by several Indian and foreign artists. Explore the city as you make your way from the Hyatt Regency, Chennai, which will be the main venue, to the other galleries and locations that are also part of the festival. What: Shekhawati Festival Where: Shekhawati, Rajasthan When: 8 to 10 February 2014 Why: About 125km away from Jaipur, this little province is full of secret treasures like hidden havelis, abandoned forts and open air picture galleries. During the Shekhawati Festival, you can tour the sights of the region, buy local handicrafts, go on jeep safaris, watch cultural programs and even join in a village game or two. What: The Emirates Airline Dubai Jazz Festival Where: Dubai, UAE When: 13 to 20 February 2014 Why: Featuring an impressive line-up of jazz artists like Al Foster, Sean Jones and Billy Childs Quartet among others, the festival also has other big names like The Wanted, Colbie Cailat, Jamie Cullum and Santana. What: Taiwan Lantern Festival Where: Taiwan, China When: 14 February 2014 Why: The sight of the thousands of glowing lanterns floating away in to the night sky at this festival is absolutely breathtaking. What: Venice Carnival Where: Venice, Italy When: 15 February to 4 March 2014 Why: Complete with costumes, masquerades, acrobats and various other artists, Venice is the place to be if you’re in the mood to party. Throw on a costume to join the hordes of masked figures that roam the city’s streets during the day and then attend super-stylish balls and parties at night. One of the highlights will be the Carnival Grand Ball on 21 February, conducted by costumed Venetian actors in a private mansion on the Grand Canal. What: London Fashion Weekend Where: London, England When: 20 to 23 February 2014 Why: Fashion shows, designer shopping, pop up stores and beauty tips from the experts. What: Deccan Festival Where: Hyderabad, India When: 25 February 2014 Why: Get a taste of Nawabi culture (and food) at the annual Deccan festival. Attend performances of ghazals, mushairas and qawwalis, sit in on poetry readings and dance performances, shop for traditional handicrafts and check out the exhibitions of Hyderabadi pearls and bangles.
