A young mother-of-seven who was shot dead in her own home was found clutching one of her children, her sister has said.
The victim, Chakita Jones, 25, was critically injured and unresponsive when police arrived on the scene shortly before midnight on Friday (local time).
Police in the North Carolina city of Fayetteville said they had been responding to reports of gunfire at the address, ABC11 reported.
The 25-year-old was rushed to hospital in a critical condition before being transported to UNC Medical Centre where she died from her injuries on Saturday evening (local time).
Ms Jones’ family told ABC11 the youngest of her seven children is just two-months-old. The oldest is 12 years.
In a GoFundMe page set up by Ms Jones’ sister, Mia DeJohn Fuller, the family has requested help to pay for her funeral expenses.
Ms DeJohn Fuller, who referred to her late sister as ‘Kita’, said the young mother was just four days shy of her 26th birthday when she was killed.
“We are here in a position we never thought we would be in. We had to say goodbye sooner than we thought,” the GoFundMe page read.
“Kita was a very loving and dedicated single parent and she leaves behind seven precious children, and her family. The entire family is in despair.”
According to ABC11, police are investigating the fatal shooting and are yet to make any arrests.
