As per certain reports, John was supposed to have lengthier role, which still could have been called a cameo in KANK. He was earlier touted to play the role of Arjun Rampal's character, who was Preity Zinta's boss in the film. However, it was reported that Karan Johar didn't want John to take such a small role in the beginning of his superstardom, so John took on the cameo of the DJ. At least, we did get to see him in the film. The same cannot be said about Riteish Deshmukh, whose cameo in KANK got cut.

The third film that SRK and John did together, both were cameos. Zoya Akhtar's debut directorial Luck By Chance was set against the backdrop of Bollywood.
