“It’s Paul Scholes’ world and we are all living in it” was the cry on social media as the former Manchester United man rolled back the years during Vincent Kompany’s testimonial match.
The midfielder played for the Premier League All-Stars against a City Legends XI for the former Manchester City captain’s charity clash at the Etihad Stadium.
With a roster of stars past and present taking part, it was Scholes who stole the show with an outrageous spinning pass into the path of Robin van Persie in the second half, leaving defender Joleon Lescott spinning in confusion.
With the game broadcast live on Sky Sports, footage of the pass attracted immediate attention on social media, with former United teammate Rio Ferdinand commenting on the audacious through-ball.
Now player-manager of Belgian club Anderlecht, Kompany missed the the game through injury.
Other stars who were involved in the included current City players Sergio Aguero and David Silva, while former players Shaun Wright-Phillips, Micah Richards and Mario Balotelli also took part.
Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville and Ashley Cole lined up for the opposition.
Money raised from the game will go to Tackle4MCR, a charity Kompany set up to help cut homelessness in Manchester.
