Piers Morgan believes Mario Lopez was “shamefully bullied” into apologising about the remarks he made about transgender children.

The Saved By The Bell star backtracked after he said he thought it was “dangerous” for parents to support transgender feelings in children as you as three-year-old.

Morgan tweeted: “I’m outraged by Mario Lopez. Why did he apologise?”

The outspoken TV presenter then respond to LGBTQ organisation Human Rights Campaign’s claim that Lopez’s comments in themselves were dangerous.

Morgan said: “What nonsense. No 3-yr-old child can possibly self-determine their own gender or sexuality. Mario’s been shamefully bullied into apologising for stating what every parent knows to be the truth. I’ve had 4 kids & they could barely determine what day it is at that age.”

And to transgender news reader India Willoughby the Good Morning Britain host said: “You know I don’t think transgender people are nuts. I do however think it’s nuts to let a 3-yr-old make any life-altering decision about anything. They haven’t a clue.”

Actor and TV presenter Lopez, who has three young children, made the remarks on PragerU video series The Candace Owens Show last month, but they resurfaced this week.

The 45-year-old star said: “I am trying to understand it myself, and please don’t lump me into that whole [group];

“I’m kind of blown away, too. Look, I’m never one to tell anyone how to parent their kids, obviously, and I think if you come from a place of love, you really can’t go wrong. But at the same time, my God, if you're three years old and you’re saying you’re feeling a certain way or you think you’re a boy or a girl or whatever the case may be, I just think it’s dangerous as a parent to make this determination then, well, OK, then you’re going to a boy or a girl, whatever the case may be ... It’s sort of alarming and, my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on.”

Lopez later mistakenly linked gender identity and sexual preference, saying, “When you’re a kid... you don’t know anything about sexuality yet. You’re just a kid.”

He also advised parents to postpone conversations about gender identity with their children.

“I think parents need to allow their kids to be kids but at the same time, you gotta be the adult in the situation,” Lopez said. “Pause with that and — I think the formative years is when you start having those discussions and really start making these declarations.” He used air quotes for those last words.

After coming under fire from various LGBTQ organisation Lopez apologised.

In a statement to Yahoo Entertainment he said: “The comments I made were ignorant and insensitive, and I now have a deeper understanding of how hurtful they were. I have been and always will be an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community, and I am going to use this opportunity to better educate myself. Moving forward I will be more informed and thoughtful.”
