PM Modi Applauds Varun, ‘Coolie No. 1’ Team for Giving up Plastic

On 11 September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to laud the team of Varun Dhawan-starrer Coolie No 1 for its efforts to avoid using plastic on the sets of the film. Modi’s tweet came in response to Varun’s tweet from 1 September.

Varun had written, “Being a plastic-free nation is the need of the hour and great initiative taken by our prime minister and we can all do this by making small changes. The sets of #CoolieNo1 will now only use steel bottles. @PMOIndia”

Varun also shared a photo of the team holding steel bottles in their hands.

Modi then responded by commending the team’s “superb gesture.”

He tweeted, “Superb gesture by the team of #CoolieNo1! Happy to see the film world contributing towards freeing India from single use plastic.”

Earlier, Varun Dhawan had also shared a close look of the steel sippers. He tweeted, “Thank u @honeybhagnani & @jackkybhagnani for making the sets of #CoolieNo1 plastic free. I urge all my peers to do this”

This interaction comes in light of Maharashtra’s ban on single-use plastic. The ban came into effect in 2018.

In June, Salman Khan had also taken to social media to share a message expressing the same sentiment. He shared a video of a monkey refusing to drink water from a plastic bottle, but immediately grabbing a cup instead. Salman wrote, “Hamara bajrangi bhaijaan plastic ki bottle se paani nahi peeta (Our bajrangi bhaijaan does not drink water from pastic bottles.)”

Coolie No 1 is produced by Vashu Bhagnani, Jackky Bhagnani and Deepshikha Deshmukh, who said: "Going #Plasticfree on #CoolieNo1. One sip at a time - hope we inspire many #BeatPlasticPollution #StayHydrated. Thank you to the Coolie-est Team for making this happen."
