No streaming platforms for Yashraj Films was an unwritten rule at Yashraj ever since the pandemic, even when the biggest of production houses have begun to divert their film releases from the movie theatres to the home-viewing digital platform. However, the one mammoth production house of India that stayed away from the OTT domain was Yashraj Films stubbornly refusing to surrender even when the chances of a revival of the movie theatres grew dim. Now I hear from very reliable sources that Yashraj has stepped down from its decision. That Aditya Chopra is “exploring the digital option seriously.” The process has already started with Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar, the Yashraj film that opened in theatres on 19 March 2021 (to empty houses) being streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
One now hears that Yashraj’s forthcoming big-screen spectacles Shamshera (starring Ranbir Kapoor) and Prithviraj Chauhan (with Akshay Kumar in the title role) would also find their way eventually on to the digital medium. A very close friend of the Chopra family reveals, “Why not? Why should Yashraj not opt for the digital option? I think it is a very sensible and practical decision. Issmein ego ki bilkul gunjaish nahin hai (there’s no scope for an egoistic attitude given the situation). What is this, ‘I’m too big to opt for digital?’ The biggest of Hollywood films are going on OTT. Look at Godzilla Versus Kong and now Army Of The Dead. We’ve to accept that OTT is the only option.”
It was only on February 17th that YRF had announced their lineup of films that will be released in 2021-2022. Shamshera was to release on June 25, 2021, and Prithviraj aimed for a Diwali release, November 5th 2021. Owing to the havoc the pandemic has created, the lockdown has been imposed in most of the parts of the country and hence YRF will of course not be sticking to their release date lineup!
