In an interview with a leading news daily, fitness consultant Rajiv Mehra, who coached the cast of the upcoming sports biopic 83, shared details on the intensive regime that it took to transform the actors into cricketers.
83 stars Ranveer Singh in the lead role as Kapil Dev alongside an ensemble cast playing the real-life Indian team which won the Cricket World Cup of 1983. Deepika Padukone is also part of the cast as Kapil’s wife Romi Dev.
Rajiv has also served as an assistant to former cricketer Balwinder Sindhu, who was part of the team that brought home the cup in 1983. He revealed that training for the film began in August 2018, almost a full year before shooting.
" “Thebiggest challenge was to get them to think like cricketers. After that, we had to tone their bodies to look like that of sportsmen, for which we taught them sprinting techniques and gave body language training.”" - Rahiv Mehra
Rajiv stated that the cast were taught the basics of batting of bowling as if they were children. He added that the actors were required to match their skills with the cricketer they were playing, apart from resembling them physically.
When Ranveer joined training in October, his batting skills were fine but his bowling needed work. The Gully Boy star ended up training for longer hours to catch up.
" “Ranveer, with the boys, would be at the ground from 8 am till noon, continuing to practice even after others had left,” " - Rajiv Mehra
Ranveer also needed to lose weight, reaching a goal of 75 kg from 86 kg, which he accomplished by swimming and working out at the gym after the cricket practice. He also had to undergo a rehab plan for a niggle in his knee which was preventing him from running fast.
The team also ended up practicing in a real cricket stadium. Rajiv claims the matches in 83 will look exactly like the actual world cup.
83 wrapped up shooting after three months on Monday 7 October. The extended cast of the film includes Harrdy Sandhu, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Ammy Virk, Jiiva, Sahil Khattar, Chirag Patil, Adinath Kothare, Dhairya Karwa, Dinker Sharma, Jatin Sarna, Nishant Dahiya, and R Badree. 83 is directed by Kabir Khan and will release on 10 April 2020.
