14 Apr 2021: Ranveer Singh roped in to lead Shankar's 'Anniyan' Hindi remake
Ranveer Singh has been confirmed to step into Vikram's shoes for the Bollywood version of Tamil blockbuster, Anniyan.
While rumors about the remake and casting have been abound since last month, its director S. Shankar finally made it official today.
The 2005 psychological thriller (Tamil) was rechristened Aparichit for its Hindi dubbed version that got released the following year.
However, it failed to click.
Announcement: Singh elated to announce collaboration with 'maverick master craftsman,' Shankar
Taking to his social media handle, Shankar wrote, "In this moment, no one will be happier than me, bringing back the larger than life cinematic experience with @RanveerOfficial in the official adaptation of cult blockbuster Anniyan. @jayantilalgada @PenMovies (sic)."
Singh also shared the news, calling Shankar the "pioneering visionary of Indian cinema" and "maverick master craftsman."
Jayantilal Gada (Pen Studios) will be the producer.
Fact: No one will be happier than me, says the director
Reports: Kiara Advani is rumored to be the female lead
Last month, when rumors started swirling about Singh being the lead for Anniyan remake, reports suggested that Kiara Advani will be his heroine.
Giving an insight into the timeline, sources had revealed both were touted to finish their ongoing schedules before starting this project.
While the Simmba star has Cirkus and a Karan Johar movie currently in production, Advani is filming Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2.
Quote: 'Shankar is an exception to the norm, a true disruptor'
Calling the role a "dream come true," Singh was all praises for the filmmaker.
"He's an exception to the norm, a true disruptor. I had always hoped and dreamed that I'd get a chance to collaborate with him," he said.
Meanwhile, a "thrilled" Shankar called Singh "mercurial" and a "one-in-a-generation actor."
The principal photography of the venture will commence in mid-2022.
Looking back: What was the Vikram-led Tamil blockbuster all about?
Starring Vikram and Sadha in the lead, Anniyan dealt with a trope quite often seen in Shankar's movies, i.e., a common man turning into a vigilante to correct the corrupt society.
Here, the goal is achieved through a protagonist who suffers from multiple personality disorder.
The movie went on to bag eight Filmfare Awards and six state film awards, alongside a National Film Award.
