At the age of 82, Ratan ji is living a life of his dreams and he is an inspiration to all of us. For those who don't know, he has immense love for dogs and the headquarters of Tata Sons i.e. the Bombay House has a tradition of giving shelter to strays during the rainy season. Not just that, he has revamped the headquarter and now it has a kennel for stray dogs. This kennel is equipped with toys, play area, and water for the canines. Well, this is enough to know that Ratan ji has a gift of compassion.
Recently, in an interview with Humans of Bombay, Tata Sons emeritus chairman, Ratan ji reminisced his first love and how he was about to marry her right after completing his college. Ratan ji talked about his childhood moments and how his grandmother shaped him to be a better person. He shared, "I had a happy childhood, but as my brother & I got older, we faced a fair bit of ragging & personal discomfort because of our parent’s divorce, which in those days wasn’t as common. But my grandmother brought us up in every way. Soon after when my mother remarried, the boys at school started saying all kinds of things about us–constantly & aggressively. But our grandmother taught us to retain dignity at all costs, a value that’s stayed with me until today. It involved walking away from these situations, which otherwise we would’ve fought back against."
In the same interview, Ratan ji revealed that it was his grandmother, who helped him achieve his dream and insisted his father to send him to the United States for further studies. He said, "I remember, after WW2, she took my brother & I for summer holidays to London. It was there that the values were really hammered in. She’d tell us, ‘don’t say this’ or ‘keep quiet about that’ & that’s where ‘dignity above everything else’ really embedded in our minds. And she’s always been there for us. It’s difficult now to say who’s right or wrong. I wanted to learn to play the violin, my father insisted on the piano. I wanted to go to college in the US, he insisted on UK. I wanted to be an architect, he insisted on me becoming an engineer. If it weren’t for my grandmother, I wouldn’t have ended up at Cornell University in the US. It was because of her that even though I enrolled for mechanical engineering, I switched majors & graduated with a degree in architecture. My father was upset & there was a fair bit of rancour, but I was finally my own, independent person in college & it was my grandmother who taught me that courage to speak up can also be soft & dignified." Ratan ji also opened up on his first love and revealed, "After college, I landed a job at an architecture firm in LA, where I worked for 2 years. It was a great time–the weather was beautiful, I had my own car & loved my job. It was in LA that I fell in love & almost got married. But at the same time I’d made the decision to move back at least temporarily since I had been away from my grandmother who wasn’t keeping too well for almost 7 years. So I came back to visit her & thought that the person I wanted to marry would come to India with me, but because of the 1962 Indo-China war her parent’s weren’t okay with her making the move anymore & the relationship fell apart."
Well, there’s an unmistakable humility and kindness about Mr Ratan Tata that can attract anyone. Recently, he had reached one million followers on his Instagram handle. To celebrate, the milestone, Ratan ji had posted a thank you note, along with a picture. While he had received a lot of love, there was one user, who called him "chotu" in his comments. To this, Ratan ji gave a beautiful reply and had replied, "There is a child in each one of us. Please treat this young lady with respect."
Meanwhile, the woman deleted her comment after realising the impact of what she had written and the trolling which she got after that. When Ratan ji had realised the same, he had taken to his Instagram stories to speak out loud about the bullying and disrespect she faced. He had written, "A very innocent young lady expressed her heartfelt sentiments yesterday and called me a kid in one of her comments. She was bullied and disrespected for this, and in the end she deleted her sentiments. I appreciate and respect the heartfelt note that the young lady had left me, and hope she will not refrain from posting again."
