Tillamook's Double Nutty Peanut Butter ice cream comes in at more than 1,3o0 calories per pint, and a whopping 102 grams of fat. It has more sugar in one pint than you would get if you ate eight Original Glazed Krispy Kreme donuts! Then there's Häagen-Dazs' Peanut Butter Salted Fudge ice cream. This has as many calories as two McDonald's Quarter Pounders with cheese.Essentially, foods that are high fat and sugar like ice cream can have negative impacts if they're eaten often. It's no secret that tons of studies have linked high sugar consumption with weight gain. This weight gain from these highly sugary foods then puts you at a much greater risk of developing more serious conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer. The data involved 3,600 people pre-pandemic in October 2019 and then 4,000 in June 2020, as the virus was surging in many parts of the country. Researchers reported "statistically significant increases in reported handwashing" during the time period, finding that in general, people were about twice as likely to wash hands in certain situations, including after coughing or sneezing and before eating. "In June 2020, more U.S. adults reported remembering to wash their hands after coughing, sneezing, or blowing their nose, before eating in a restaurant, before eating at home, and after using the bathroom at home compared with responses in October 2019," they write in the study. "The most substantial increases were in the percentages of those remembering to wash their hands after experiencing respiratory symptoms. "In both 2019 (pre-pandemic) and 2020 (during the pandemic), higher percentages of older adults, women, Black persons, and Hispanic persons reported remembering to wash their hands in multiple situations than did young adults, men, and white adults," the new study said. "Because older adults, Black persons, and Hispanic persons have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19, engagement in preventive behaviors by these persons is particularly important.""Public health efforts should promote frequent handwashing for all, with attention to tailoring messaging to men, young adults, and non-Hispanic White adults," encourages the CDC. "Particular focus should be placed on encouraging handwashing at important times such as before eating and after experiencing respiratory symptoms." Here there are more traces of cadmium, a metal that can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and even kidney disease, according to the CDC. A team of researchers from Ecuador and Belgium is now looking to develop ways to reduce the amount of cadmium that ultimately ends up in cacao beans, according to a new report in the Journal of Environmental Quality."The cadmium issue threatens the livelihood of farmers because their products may not be suitable for trade and some buyers would prefer not to buy polluted cacao beans," says David Argüello, a member of the research team. "In order to find an effective mitigation strategy, we have to understand how cacao plants takes up the element." This is because their roots are deep. Other plants, like corn, sunflowers, and more, live closer to the surface. In between harvesting and planting, mixing the soil digs up even deepest layers. A common way to remove cadmium from the soil is adding in an element found in limestone, simply called lime. This lime (not the citrus fruit) helps prevent plants from absorbing cadmium. Soil mixing allows lime to reach all the layers of soil it needs to.The soil around cacao tree roots can't be mixed up and treated with lime because they aren't replanted every year. In an experiment, lime was added to both the top and deeper layers of soil containing cacao seeds in a greenhouse. The team of researchers found fewer amounts of the harmful metal in the leaves. While successful, the process can't be done on cacao trees in the field. But, it opens doors to finding a permanent solution in the future.In the meantime, limiting your candy intake is the best way to avoid the toxic ingredient in chocolate. If you're a die-hard McDonald's breakfast fan, we've got some good news. While the burger chain hasn't chimed in on the speculations that it won't be bringing back all-day breakfast (a silence which many are taking as confirmation of the devastating news), they just revealed new all-day menu additions that could take its place.
