Santos Travel To La Bombonera To Face Boca Juniors For Copa Libertadores

Boca Juniors to host Santos at La Bombonera in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores semi-final on Thursday at 3:45 AM IST. The two of South America’s biggest giants will clash midweek.

In the previous match, Boca Juniors were held to a 2-2 draw against River Plate at home. An early strike from Ramon Abile gave them the advantage until two second-half goals gave River a lead before Sebastian Villa managed to put the ball in the nets in the 86th minute to draw the game.

Santos also had a stalemate at home to Cera, goals from Samuel and Marinho in the first half shared the spoils.

The two teams faced each other on five occasions on the continental stage. The two sides faced-off in the final of 2003, Copa Libertadores, where the Argentines pocketed a 5-1 victory to clinch their fifth Libertadores title, with a 2-0 first-leg win in Argentina and a 3-1 victory in Brazil. The two teams also clashed in 1963 final, Santos registered a 5-3 victory.

Midfielder Diego Gonzalez is ruled out with a long-term injury. Apart from that Coach Miguel Russo has a full squad to choose from for the upcoming game.

Santos has several absentees for Thursday’s fixture, Fernando Pilleggi, Jobson, Para, Vladimir, Raniel, Rafael Longuine and Carlos Andres Sanchez, are all unavailable for selection.
