Schools to Be Ranked Based on Level of Fitness: Centre

Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju said on Tuesday, 27 November, announced a grading system for schools based on the importance they give to the students' physical activity, reported the Indian Express.

The announcement was made by Kiren Rijiju at the walkathon conducted at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi by fitness services provider VLCC.

The rankings are to be in three categories — The Fit India Schools, which is the first ranking, Fit India School (3-star) and Fit India School (5-star).

Along with this star based ranking system, Rijiju also announced the introduction of fitness awards for villages and districts.

“Citizens need to be fit. The activity doesn’t mean sitting on your laptop and playing games, but going outdoors and sweating it out. Physical fitness is important not just for youngsters, but for people of all ages,” Rijiju said.

At the event, Rijiju also announced that starting this year, the 2nd or 3rd week of november will be observed as a 'fitness week' by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), as part of the Fit India Movement.

He also called the Fit india initiative a 'movemnet of the people' rather than just the government.
