After not having a single release in 2018, Kriti Sanon had as many as four releases in 2019! Here is how the year turned out for her….
After making her film debut with the Telugu film ‘1: Nennokkadine’, Kriti Sanon made a successful transition to Hindi cinema with ‘Heropanti’, a film which proved to be a clean hit. Since then, a bunch of other films followed. In ‘Dilwale’, she proved she had all the qualities to play the quintessential heroine. Though the film underperformed, her pairing with Varun Dhawan and the songs they featured together in became huge hits. ‘Raabta’ was rejected by the audience but the fact remains that with the two roles she got to play in the film, she managed to prove what a fine actress she really is. ‘Raabta’ remains her best performance till date. What did make the audience take notice of her acting abilities was ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’, in which she played a de-glam, tomboy—ish girl from the small city. The film was a good success and Kriti saw several accolades coming her way for her performance post the release of the film.
After this career high, one had expected to see her go on a signing spree but that did not happen. Instead, she took a bit of time to decide the next couple of projects she would like to associate herself with. This resulted in a no-show 2018, a year in which she did not have a single release. While a film like ‘Arjun Patiala’ was shot during this period, it hit the screens in mid-2019.
‘Luka Chuppi’, her first release of 2019, did the same to Kriti what ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ did – it gave her an author-backed role and enough scope to show her acting prowess. However, this time around, the numbers that came in much higher. While ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ did moderately well at the box-office, this one fell short of just a few crores of hitting the 100-crore mark. A 90+ crore total was a huge number for a film of this size! Next arrived the much delayed ‘Arjun Patiala’, which despite tapping into a lesser explored genre in Hindi cinema (spoof comedy), could not find much resonance with the audience.
The love bestowed upon on the series by the audience has more than made up for the disapproval the ‘Housefull’ films get from the critics. Each film in the installment has proved to be a bigger hit than the last one and that just goes on to show that the audience likes these films despite what the critics have to say about them. ‘Housefull 4’ managed to cross the 200-crore mark at the domestic box-office and turned out to be the biggest hit in the franchise by a mile.
From the promos of ‘Panipat’, one had got the idea that this was a film which would be dominated by the male actors. In war-based film, one often sees that writers/directors fail to flesh out the female characters properly and often saddle them with poorly-written or half-baked roles. This was not the case here as director Ashutosh Gowariker and his team of writers etched out the character of Parvati Bai very well. While there is very little written about Parvati Bai in historical documents, in Gowariker’s cinematic universe of ‘Panipat’, she was a well fleshed-out character. Kriti, on her part, did complete justice to her part and played it with utmost dignity. ‘Panipat’ is a film which deserved to do much better at the box-office but Kriti’s portrayal of Parvati Bai is bound to be remembered for a very long time by those who saw the film and will see it on home media platforms.
As of now, the two projects featuring her which have been confirmed for next year are ‘Mimi’ and ‘Bachchan Pandey’. While in ‘Mimi’, she plays the central protagonist, in Bachchan Pandey, wherein Akshay Kumar plays the titular role, is expected to be an out-and-out commercial potboiler. With a few more official announcements on the way, one expects an even more eventful 2020 for Kriti!
