Serial killer Levi Bellfield has been put on suicide watch after he reportedly attempted to take his own life in prison.
According to the Sun on Sunday Bellfield, who murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler, along with Marsha McDonnell 19, and Amelie Delagrange, 22, was found injured in his cell at the notorious HMP Frankland.
Sources have said the 51-year-old former bouncer was found badly hurt in his cell but medics were quickly called to tend to him.
A source said: “He was minutes from death — if the prison officers hadn’t been on hand so swiftly, he would have died.”
Bellfield murdered 13-year-old Milly in 2002 after abducting her in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.
She went missing on her way home from school and her body was found in woodland six months later.
Bellfield is one of around 50 whole-life sentence cons in the UK, is now under 24-hour watch at top security Frankland Prison in County Durham where he is in the company of Ian Huntley and Peter Sutcliffe, better known as the Yorkshire Ripper.
