Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s performance Monday at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards was, in a word, steamy.

The singers performed their romantic hit, “Señorita,” and came this close to kissing onstage. That would have been a big deal because there have long been rumors about the two’s relationship status.

In 2015, they collaborated on the song “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” They released their latest track in June.

They’ve since been photographed together several times over the last few weeks, even holding hands and kissing. However, they’ve yet to confirm a romantic relationship.

When they shared the stage Monday night, their chemistry was undeniable. It seemed like they were building up to something, like maybe a kiss, but they stopped themselves just short of it. They went for a nose rub instead.

The entire audience, including celebrities, was mesmerized.

Cameras caught Joe Jonas and wife Sophie Turner, Bebe Rexha, Taylor Swift and others freaking out from their prime seats in the audience when they thought the kiss might happen.

Jonas shared the video himself and admitted that he was still thinking about the moment Mendes and Cabello really, really seemed like they were about to kiss but didn’t after the VMAs had ended.

He wasn’t the only one, judging by the reactions.

Mendes and Cabello also shared the stage when their song won the Moon Man for the year’s Best Collaboration.
