After delivering five flops in a row, Sidharth Malhotra wins the heart of the audience with his portrayal of Raghu in Marjaavaan

Five flops in a row – that is what Sidharth Malhotra was staring at a while back. After the much acclaimed and commercially successful ‘Kapoor & Sons’, Sidharth was looking forward to the multiple films he had in hand. He tries his hand at different genres with ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ (sci-fi romance), ‘A Gentleman’ (comic thriller), ‘Ittefaq’ (murder mystery), ‘Aiyaary’ (action thriller) and ‘Jabariya Jodi’ (small-town romance) but none of these films brought any real dividends for him at the box-office. Though films like ‘A Gentleman’ and ‘Ittefaq’ found an audience later on television, digital and home video, the box-office failure of these films hurt his career badly.

‘Marjaavaan’, directed by Milap Milan Zaveri, was an important film for him. He needed a hit and there were a few challenge that lied before him. His commercial value as a leading man had taken a beating because of back-to-back failures and a lot of people were not sure if he would be able to pull off the character of a larger-than-life hero, something which he had not attempted before. There were shades of it in ‘Ek Villain’ but this was the first time he was going be seen as a ‘mass hero’.

‘Marjaavaan’, released last Friday, has emerged as a successful film. The collections are steady and a good hold till the second Friday would ensure a clean hit status for the film. It remains to be seen as to how far does this film will go but one thing is clear – it has given a new lease of life to Sidharth’s career and has also helped him establish as a commercial hero.

The actor’s next ‘Shershaah’, in which he portrays the role of the late Captain Vikram Batra, is a good follow-up to this film as in the Vishnuvardhan directed film too he will be seen in a heroic avatar. Of course, it is a completely different character and the film is set in a very different space. In ‘Marjaavaan’ his character had shades of grey but in ‘Shershaah’ he will be paying a tribute to a real-life hero through his portrayal.
