Sisters give birth to baby girls on the same day, in the same hospital with the same midwife

Two sisters have told of their surprise about giving birth to babies on the same day, in the same hospital and with the same midwife.

Phoebe Rose, 28, and her big sister, Sophie Thomson, 31, took over the maternity ward when they both gave birth to little girls just six hours apart - with the help of the same midwife.

Though the sisters had due dates just one day apart, they never imagined they'd end up giving birth on the same day.

Older sister, Sophie, found out she was six weeks pregnant just a few days before Phoebe called her to break her own exciting news.

Phoebe gave birth to baby Nellie first, and proud aunt Sophie arrived at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham to visit her new niece, already in labour, and going on to welcome baby Nancie, just six hours after her cousin was born.

"I visited Phoebe in the hospital, and I was literally doubled over with contractions by the side of her bed, so I knew it was time to go!” Sophie says.

Having said goodbye to Phoebe and her new niece, the team leader was taken straight to the delivery suite.

"The midwife came over and said she'd just delivered my sister's baby, so hoped she could help deliver mine as well, and of course I said yes!"

Phoebe, a community carer, added: "When we found out we were pregnant at the same time, we never dreamt of giving birth on the same day, but I'm so glad it all happened the way it did.”

When Phoebe texted her sister Sophie that she was feeling unwell in January, she was surprised when her sibling suggested taking a pregnancy test.

"As soon as the little positive lines came up on the screen, I knew I had to phone Sophie back immediately,” Phoebe explains.

"I was in such a state of shock at my own news, I could barely process it when Sophie told me she was pregnant too!”

Sophie added: "When Phoebe said she'd not been feeling well, I immediately suggested she take a test, but I was totally surprised when she rang back to say she was pregnant.

"I had been trying to keep it quiet until I hit the 12 week mark, but when Phoebe rang me with her news, I couldn't hold the secret in any longer!

"My due date was the day before Sophie's, and as soon as we found that out, everybody was joking we'd give birth on the same day."

The sisters enjoyed going through pregnancy together and having found out they were both expecting girls were thrilled they would grow up being close in age, but never expected them to actually share a birthday.

As their pregnancies drew to a close, Phoebe was admitted into hospital with high blood pressure and was eventually induced three days after her due date.

After a long 26 hour labour, Phoebe finally gave birth to a beautiful little girl called Nellie on 21st August 2015, but the drama wasn't over yet.

Sophie was three days past her own due date, and knew Phoebe had been called in to be induced, but was surprised to find herself experiencing early labour pain, eventually going into labour just moments after Phoebe had given birth.

Arriving at the same hospital, Sophie was immediately looked after by the very same midwife that had delivered Phoebe's daughter.

Phoebe said: "I was cradling Nellie in the hospital bed, absolutely exhausted, when my midwife came back into the room and said Sophie had phoned to say she was in labour.

"I couldn't believe it was actually happening.

"Moments later, she burst into the hospital room, leaning over in pain as the contractions took over her - I couldn't believe it!

Sophie's daughter Nancie was born just six hours after Nellie, and the two sisters could finally relax.

The whole experience has brought the siblings closer together than ever before, so much so that they now only live four doors down from each other.

The cousins, who are best friends, celebrated their fourth birthday together this week and are due to start school in the same class next month.

“We've always been close, but this whole experience has just brought us together in a way we never expected,” Sophie says.

Phoebe adds: "It was so magical, and watching our two gorgeous girls grow up together is the most wonderful experience in the world.

"I'm forever grateful to have gone through this with Sophie.

"She was my rock throughout it all and I hope Nellie and Nancy grow up to be as close as we are."
