Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid tore into a guest dressed as a giant piece of broccoli, accusing him of being a ‘plant’ from the meat industry to ridicule veganism.
‘Mr Broccoli’, who claimed to identify as a vegetable, was arrested on Sunday at the Animal Rebellion protest - held to raise awareness of the benefits to the environment of a plant-based diet - but released without charge.
Appearing on ITV’s GMB this morning ‘Mr Broccoli’ that his purpose was “to just grow” and aspire towards a “plant-based food system”.
Reid, 48, commented: “Your argument, dressed up as broccoli, strikes me as so absurd that you’re wearing a costume but you’re trying to get a serious point across about veganism.”
She added: “I think you’re a plant by the meat industry.”
Mr Broccoli said: "I'm just a humble broccoli, and environmentally speaking, we are in incredibly hot water.”
He added: “It’s going to go pear-shaped.”
At one point during the interview Mr Broccoli interrupted the presenters and took a banana out of his jacket pocket and pretended to be taking a phone call.
He was accompanied by a fellow member of Animal Rebellion who talked about “cherry-picking” causes.
Co-presenter Piers Morgan, 54, told them: “The trouble is Mr Broccoli, had you made a very coherent, powerful, science-based argument, you would have had a real impact.
“You would have a lot of attention through the way you dressed up for your cause, but to come on here and just be an idiot makes us think you’re just an idiot.”
The interview was cut short with Reid, who is herself a vegetarian, fuming: "I'm really cross, they had a fantastic opportunity and they wasted it."
