Calvin met Jeanette while they were in college, and over the course of their eight-year relationship, the pair have overcome many obstacles. For roughly four years, they were in a long-distance relationship as they each pursued their dreams. However, the greatest challenge in their relationship occurred when Calvin was hit by a car in New York and broke both his legs. "Waking up after my first surgery, doctors were doubtful I'd ever be able to walk stairs ever again. My spirit was shattered like the bones in my legs," Calvin said. One of his legs had such severe nerve damage that he could not even lift it up. However, Jeanette was always by his side and had no doubt that he would make a full recovery. She supported him throughout everything and was by his side when he had to climb stairs. "Needless to say, stairs have a big metaphorical significance to our relationship," Calvin continued. "One step at a time." Calvin was able to make a full recovery! In the years to come, Jeanette pursued her dream of architecture design and was tasked to create a staircase for a large company's New York headquarters. Calvin decided that this very staircase would be the perfect place to propose to the love of his life. "To pull off the perfect surprise proposal, Calvin had some insider help at Jeanette's office [to] make the magic happen - she thought she was going to a potential client meeting that evening," photographer Christine Chen said. When Jeanette walked toward the staircase, she was surprised to see Calvin. He got down on one knee and asked her to marry him, and to his delight, she said yes. Everyone in the office cheered with excitement, then her family (who were hiding in a corner room) ran toward the happy couple, and they all celebrated the joyous occasion. One of the disappointing news from the movie industry is the poor performance at the box-office of Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, for, Bollywood’s first mainstream movie about LGBTQ love (Deepa Mehta’s 1996 film Fire was for a niche audience) needed more public backing, just to reinforce the feeling that India as a society is changing in these matters in the right direction. Of course, the lukewarm performance of the film at the box-office does not become a referendum on Indian society’s views on matters like homosexuality and queer lives. A movie may not do well for numerous reasons, and cinematically Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga does slip at a few places, but it is a movie that is full of heart, which in turn is full of love.

More than a week since its release, Veere Di Wedding has been making money steadily, raking in more than Rs 65 crores. The film, which includes a highly controversial masturbation scene involving Swara Bhaskar and a vibrator has been lauded and ripped apart, alike, for its portrayal of four women and their takes on life, its problems and female sexuality. While many have called this the coming of age of Bollywood films depicting sex and sexuality, others have called it vulgar.Sex has since long been a male bastion in India, with Bollywood particularly objectifying women and portraying sex either in a crass manner (Mastizaade, Kya Kool Hain Hum, Grand Mast) or an overtly erotic way, (Raaz). Very little focus has been placed on the subject of women and their sexuality, and as Actor Vishwas Kini rightly puts it, a lot of men in India do not even know that women have orgasms too. However, a few films have tried to break away from the stereotype and have dared to explore the subject of female sexuality and independence in a serious, non-conventional manner. This past week, as we settled down with our mugs of freshly brewed draught beer, I saw Cynthia* roll her eyes when she spotted the hickey on my neck. Both, my friends Cynthia and Amitabh* where ‘happily’ married with healthy spouses and there was no reason for me to believe otherwise. Cynthia replied, almost disgusted, as if I was indulging in some immoral act, “After the long working hours and with a kid, how do you manage to find time to have sex?” I realized immediately it had less to do with my sex-life and more to do with hers.
