When you re-watch some of the nostalgic music albums/movie songs from the nineties and early noughties, it wouldn’t be surprising to find some familiar faces, that make us shake our heads in disbelief saying, “I didn’t recognise him/her back then!”. Not all movie stars were lucky enough to land big roles from the beginning itself, but they instead have worked their way to the top, starting sometimes with cameo roles or by featuring in music videos. Tamannaah did a cameo appearance in Tamil film Enakku 20 Unakku 18 at the age of 13, which probably went unnoticed.
The Bollywood actress has set the mercury soaring on Instagram with pictures from her recent Mexican sojourn. The Bollywood star has posted photos of hers in beachwear, enjoying the sun with her husband Daniel Weber. Needless to say, Sunny looks stunning.
While in the West, there are several examples of celebrity parents who remain single, in a conventional society like India, the concept of single parenting is often welcomed with raised eyebrows. When Sushmita Sen adopted a baby girl in back in 2000, she had to overcome many legal hassles. Sushmita later won her appeal at the Bombay High Court, and thus played a significant role in the amendment of the adoption law in India.
The advent of social media has opened up the doors for celebrity impersonators, and Twitter is rife with parody accounts of popular politicians and actors. If you may recall, model/actress Tara Sharma tagged the fake Abhishek Bachchan (@juniorbacchhan) twice, while thanking him on two separate occasions. Most of these funny parody accounts are hugely popular, like that of Arvind Kejriwal or Rahul Gandhi.
Aishwarya Rai had already been familiar to the Indian audience much before she won the Miss India runner-up title, and eventually the Miss World crown, in 1994. One such ad had gone viral on Youtube last year, where the Bollywood star can be seen featured alongside another star, Sonali Bendre. The ad was for Radha’s garments, where a young gorgeous Aishwarya can be seen sporting a different hairstyle.

Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover have been married for almost a year, and the couple still seems to be in the honeymoon phase, pretty much drunk in love, not shying away from expressing their feelings for each other. While most Bollywood actors refrain from PDA on social media, Bips and her beau celebrate their bond by posting lovey-dovey selfies often, thereby becoming a definition of couple goals. Bips adorably calls Karan ‘monkey’, hence uses the hashtag #monkeylove whenever she posts something on him.
Priyanka Chopra’s best buddy Diana, the teeny dog, is growing up fast, and the actress has made sure not to miss any milestones of her adorable furry baby. It is indeed cute that the display name goes as Diana Chopra.

Shunning the spectacles had been an inevitable part of any story that had a cinderella moment where its average plain Jane character metamorphosizes into an irresistible damsel. Ugly Betty, princess Mia, all these fictional characters who had an astonishing makeover had to toss away their glasses in order unleash that powerful and sexy inner goddesses within. Pop culture of the past failed to see any harmony between brainy and sexy; calling someone a nerd, was akin to insult those days. Even superheroes like Superman and Spiderman preferred to hide their real selves behind awkward alter egos wearing nerdy glasses. With the passage of time and fashion’s shifting loyalties, what used to be ‘uncool’ started becoming cool; the next thing you know, geek chic got mainstream, capitalising on the favourable wind. Inclusiveness and plurality being the motto these days, words like sapiosexual — a neologistic word to define someone who is turned on by intelligence — has become voguish. For millennials who scorn binary, brains matter equally as brawn, and they love to channel their inner geek with flamboyance. The geek look ooze sex appeal as well, however counterintuitive that would seem to a conformist. In Bollywood as well, leading stars like Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut, Katrina Kaif, etc., often rock their off-duty look in glasses. In the West, models Kendall Jenner and Emily Ratajkowski are often credited for popularising the minimalist style with a dash of nerdiness. Even Mia Khalifa, the popular adult actress, seldom parts with her glasses. Thanks to celebrities, #geekchic is one of the popular hashtags on Instagram these days. Check out some of the Bollywood movies that portrayed heroines in glasses. Don’t they look spec(s)tacular? (Image credit: Movie Talkies)
The motifs, costumes, lighting, etc., are equally important as characters in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movies, where they all coalesce into one beautiful canvas frozen in time, and when you dissect his works, we can find many such depictions. The creative genius of Bhansali, an intransigent movie maker who prides himself on the niceties of his works, remains incomparable in Bollywood, all for his artistic eloquence. Critics argued that the opulence in the movie was rather distractive and quelled the true spirit of its characters.
When Devdas — Bhansali’s magnum opus, was released in 2002, it split the movie enthusiasts into two; many wrote paeans on Bhansali’s aesthetic sense, while the rest found fault with his extravagant adaptation of a rather poignant story of love and pathos. Critics argued that the opulence in the movie was rather distractive and quelled the true spirit of its characters. Bhansali deliberately eschewed dull fidelity for a subjective rendition of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s famous novel, and that daring decision was proven right when the movie became a huge hit in India and abroad alike, bagging several accolades. Devdas became successful for the very reason that it was indeed a far cry from reality. Rules have no room in art. It can either be a realistic take on life or could be a montage of exaggerated tableaux that panders to the connoisseurs of classic beauty. In Bhansali’s movies, the line blurs between these two modes of expression, or we can even say that he would never forgo the second. The result? A whiff of enchantment that puts the audience into to a reverie. Saawariya was one such work of art. Although the debut movie of Ranbir and Sonam Kapoor failed at the box office, the movie seemed like it breathed life into a painting with its overindulgence of myriad shades of blue. Ranbir’s guitar, the gossamery Mona Lisa curtain at Lilian’s house, the clock tower, the bridge, the bar…everything about that fictitious place reminded us of story book. Whether you are a fan of Bhansali’s style or not, it goes without saying that he is a maestro when it comes to aesthetics. Image courtesy: Movie Talkies

White is the new red in Bollywood! There was a time when our divas were going hook, line and sinker about red dresses, lip shades and sarees. But it looks like times have changed! B-town women seem to swear by white sarees off late!
Bollywood directors always like to bring back some bits and pieces of the past, into the present. Be it through movie scenes, music or dialogues, there have been instances where Bollywood films have touched upon yesteryear films. The upcoming Karan Johar flick Ae Dil Hai Mushkil also falls under the same category. While Ranbir and Anushka have done full justice in recreating the Sridevi-Rishi magic, they are not the first to do so.
When Joel Cervantes happened to see an elderly man laboriously pushing his popsicle cart through the streets of Chicago, little could he have imagined of the impact the crossing of their paths would have on the latter’s life. Cervantes learned that the old man Fidencio Sanchez’s daughter had passed away recently, which forced him and his wife to start working again to support their two grandchildren, and also to take care of the bills. Cervantes not just bought popsicles worth $50, but took a photo of the old man and shared the same on Facebook, which garnered the attention of the people.
