Courtney Love: ‘I thought: this dress is crazy-looking, but I’ll make it work’

‘I felt like I looked pretty good’ ... Courtney Love arrives at the Golden Globes in 2000. Photograph: Bei/Rex/ShutterstockI was going to wear Versace to the Golden Globes in 2000 – it was already in my wardrobe – but the dress I ended up wearing was from John Galliano’s Christian Dior haute couture collection that was “inspired” by homelessness [the New York Times described the contentious collection as “tasteless chic”]. My good friends Arianne Phillips [the costume designer] and Joe Mama-Nitzberg [the artist] called me and said: “You have to wear couture!” I didn’t really get couture until this. My mind was blown – I thought: “This is what they were talking about.”The dress arrived and it was ridiculous. It was straight up and down and had twine on it. On the twine there was a book of matches, glass, all this taxidermy. I remember thinking: “OK, it’s crazy-looking, but I’ll make it work.”I lived next door to Carrie Fisher at the time and Meryl Streep happened to be at her house. I put the dress in an Armani carry bag and told my daughter, Frances, to give it to Meryl. She came back with a polaroid of Meryl goofing around in the gown and I just lost it; it was so funny.I made alterations, which really changed the dress. My assistant’s boyfriend was very slender and about my height, so he became my model. I was taking bits off, sewing on to it. I bite my nails, so I wore acrylics, but they were painted turquoise with glitter streaks to match my original outfit. I am a big believer in matchy-matchy, but [when I changed my choice of dress] I didn’t have time to take them off. I also did stupid stuff like jump up and down on a mini trampoline with my arms and legs in plastic bags so I would lose sweat weight, but I fit into it and I felt like I looked pretty good.A lot went into this look and it was controversial when I wore it. I have big boobs and it was important that they didn’t fall out. I don’t think tit-tape really works and looking back I don’t know how I kept it on – it was a miracle. I think maybe I glued it.

20 celebrity outfits that left us scratching our heads in 2018

We often turn to the A-list pack in search of sartorial inspiration whether it’s a red carpet ensemble that’s made our Pinterest board or a street style pap shot that’s inspired our latest shopping list.Yet although armed with a celebrity stylist and wardrobe team, Hollywood’s biggest names don’t always hit the right fashion notes. This year, the near-naked trend reigned the headlines and although a major talking point, the likes of Bella Hadid and Rita Ora failed to make some of our best dressed lists as a consequence.2018 has also been a time of experimentation for a bunch of celebrities with Amber Heard trialling a couture swimming cap on the red carpet to Lady Gaga making Shakespearean ruffles a thing. But if we had to give the award for this year’s most unusual wardrobe, actor Ezra Miller is a sure-fire winner thanks to that Moncler puffer dress. From Rihanna’s pope-inspired Met Gala ensemble to Robert Pattinson’s twist on the traditional tux, these were this year’s most unusual (and wonderfully weird) celebrity outfits.Follow us on Instagram and Facebook for non-stop inspiration delivered fresh to your feed, every day. Post-4am Fitting, Lady Gaga's Emmy Dress Designer Has Out of Body Experience

Lady Gaga wears a dress designed by her best friend and stylist Brandon Maxwell. What a difference a week makes! Fast forward to Sunday, and his best friend and pop icon, Lady Gaga, chose to wear not one but two of his gowns to the Emmys and subsequent afterparties.

Lady Gaga Changed Into a Cloud & More Emmys Party Looks

After working the red carpet at the Emmys in a one-shoulder dress from her friend and longtime stylist Brandon Maxwell, Lady Gaga switched from black to white to party the night away. Her second dress was strapless and a simple column piece, and made fit for Mother Monster with wild cloud-like sleeves that seemingly floated down from the sky and landed on her arms. But the singer wasn’t the only one to trade their statement-making red carpet gowns for more fun and flirty frocks: Sarah Hyland slipped out of her berry Zac Posen number and put on an LBD, Queen Latifah took off her dress and opted for party pants and a green fedora. But most people didn’t bother. Kerry Washington, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, January Jones, and others stuck with their original looks. The after parties, hosted by Fox and HBO, also opened up the guest list, inviting not just nominees and presenters but various celebrities including Katherine McPhee in a black jumpsuit, Jennifer Morrison in a dress over pants, Abigail Breslin in a vintage-inspired flapper dress, and more. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest for nonstop inspiration delivered fresh to your feed, every day.

Sarah Silverman Trades Goofy for Glam on the TIFF 2015 Red Carpet

Before the Golden Lion was even awarded at the Venice Film Festival, actors were already making their way from Italy across multiple timezones to Ontario. The Toronto International Film Festival kicked off very fashionably and throughout the duration hasn’t stopped. Natalie Portman set the bar high attending the opening festivities in a Dior Couture floral mini dress and the hits kept on coming. The Martian’s star-studded cast on the red carpet including Kate Mara in a red A.L.C. jumpsuit, Matt Damon in head-to-toe black, and Jessica Chastain in a Lanvin LBD were all dressed to the nines. Sandra Bullock turned heads — twice! — in a pink jumpsuit and black David Koma midi. But so far Elizabeth Olsen, stylish sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, has stood out as the sartorial winner wearing trends straight off the runway from big bell sleeves to a dress over pants. Tom Hardy Brought His Beloved Dog Woody to a Movie Premiere

Nicknamed Woody, the dog is actually a celebrity in his own right, having been featured in a PETA campaign with his adopted father.  Tom Hardy and Woody star in a PETA campaign.  The action star, known for his roles in Inception and The Dark Knight Rises, has such a deep and enduring devotion to his animal best friends —yes, he has multiple — that not only does he bring them to movie sets and red carpets, but he also talks about them at length and has even admitted to liking the animals more than humans (minus his son, Louis, 7, who “couldn’t do anything to upset me.”)  Tom Hardy and a pitbull puppy keeping each other warm.  “Wherever I go, I get a dog, pretty much,” Hardy told Vulture when asked about Woody, whom he found wandering the highway in Atlanta when filming Lawless and brought home to London. “I’m the finder of dogs, you know what I mean. My missus, she’s like, “You’re not allowed to bring another dog back from a job.” But I’ll always find one.
