The first clash between the biopic dramas – Ajay Devgn’s Taanhaji Vs Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak has turned out to be unexpected. Let us see which film has more chance to score big on day 4 at the box office.
Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior
Tanhaji The Unsung Warrior tells the story of Tanhaji Malusare who was a military leader in the Maratha Empire and has fought alongside Maratha leader Shivaji Maharaj in various battles throughout the years. Tanhaji Malusare is popular for his role in the Battle of Sinhagad and is played by Ajay Devgn. Tanhaji The Unsung Warrior is being directed by Om Raut, who earlier made the the Marathi film Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush (2015) and will have Saif Ali Khan, Kajol and Pankaj Tripathi in the pivotal roles
While the first day of Tanhaji (touched Rs 15.10 crore) was simply mind-blowing, the favourable reviews of the historical drama has been encouraging which has led to an excellent user reviews from the audience as per BookMyShow, the collections picked up on the 2nd day with Rs 20.57 crore. The earnings shot up on the third day with a staggering Rs 26.08 crore. As per early estimates, the historical drama should collect some where between Rs 11-12 crore, bringing the 4 days total to Rs 71-72 crore. The budget of Tanhaji is Rs 125 crore (Production Cost: 110 Crore and Prints & Advertising Cost: 15 Crore) and has been released in 3880 screens across India
Chhapaak was already in the news thanks to stint performed by Deepika Padukone at JNU which has created huge controversy around the film. Nevertheless, the controversy did not benefit the film that much as the film opened below expectation.
Chhapaak received decent reviews as per BookMyShow.com which has led to an opening of just Rs 4.77 crore. There was slight growth on Saturday and Sunday with Rs 6.90 crore and Rs 7.35 crore.
However, the social-drama dropped heavily on Monday and collected somewhere between Rs 2.5-3 crore, bringing the total to Rs 22-23 crore which is below expectations considering the controversy, star power of Deepika Padukone who is collaborating with Meghna Gulzar (Filhaal, Talwar and Raazi) for the first time. The collections is expected to grow on Wednesday as there is a holiday due to Makarsankrati, Lohiri and Pongal.
The budget of Chhapaak is Rs 45 crore ( Production Cost: 35 Crore , Prints & Advertising Cost: 10 Crore) and has been released in 1700 screens across India.
