Two duck hunters have filmed the moment a “monster alligator” chomped down on a duck in a Florida swamp.

Posting the video on Instagram, Kevin Stipe and Cass Couey captured an alligator they estimated to be about four metres long swim up behind a duck they had just shot, and swallow it whole.

According to Mr Stipe the alligator was pretty smart and kept waiting for the hunters to shoot the ducks before taking its time to enjoy an easy meal, capturing the second time it ate a duck they had just shot on camera.

"Ok, you're fed, now get out of here,” one of the men can be heard saying in the video.

"It was just another day in the swamp for us, but I’m glad people are loving it” Mr Couey told FOX 35 News.

The video went viral on social media with seasoned duck hunters just as surprised by the size of the reptile.

“Look at this dinosaur,” one person replied.

Another person said the video was the reason they don’t use hunting dogs to retrieve shot ducks.

“This why I never used dogs to retrieve ducks. I’ve known a few people that had their dogs eaten just like this,” one person commented.

Another alligator has been causing a splash on social media after a man was filmed saving his small puppy from the jaws of a Florida reptile in October.

In the video Richard Wilbanks emerges from the water clasping the alligator’s jaws with his hands as his dog Gunner howls in pain caught in its mouth.

Mr Wilbank managed to pry the alligator’s jaws apart and free his pet, Gunner escaped with “one little puncture wound”.
