Star Wars officially enters the streaming age with The Mandalorian, an all-new series set in George Lucas’s far, far away galaxy that’s launching on Disney+ on Nov. 12.
Overseen by Jon Favreau, the action-packed series features Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal in the title role as a helmeted gunslinger exploring the intergalactic frontier well beyond the familiar planets we know from the feature film series. Based on the just-released trailer for the series, Favreau has wrapped a vintage Western yarn in shiny Star Wars packaging. (Watch the trailer above.)
For those wondering what time period Favreau has chosen for The Mandalorian, Pascal’s nameless space cowboy will embark on his journey through the galactic frontier following the events of Return of the Jedi, when the New Republic is struggling to rise out of the ashes of Palpatine’s empire. His specific mission is tracking an asset for a bounty hunter guild headed up by Greef Carga (Carl Weathers). Along the way he crosses paths with Cara Dune (Gina Carano), a one-time member of the Republic-rebuilding Shock Trooper force.
Also appearing in the series — as well as the trailer — are Giancarlo Esposito and Werner Herzog. (Yes... that Werner Herzog.) Not glimpsed are Nick Nolte and Ming-Na Wen, whose casting was announced earlier today along with the news that she’s the first Asian-American actress to appear across all three major Disney properties: animation (Mulan), Marvel (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and now Star Wars.
The show’s darker, more serious tone is established in the opening scenes of the trailer, with images of bloody Stormtrooper helmets mounted on spikes. That’s followed by shots of the Mandalorian’s spacecraft soaring above a variety of alien terrains on his lonely quest. There’s also plenty of familiar Star Wars iconography, ranging from speeder bikes to Carbonite-frozen figures, which suggests there are some Hutts in the mix. It goes without saying that this sneak peek went over very well on Twitter.

Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, followed up The Mandalorian trailer drop with official confirmation that an Obi-Wan series headlined by Ewan McGregor will be coming to Disney+ in the not too distant future. “We have all the scripts written, [and] we’re ready to start shooting next year,” she revealed. The Scottish actor himself took the D23 stage and said that he’s been holding this secret in his back pocket for four long years.
You know what they say: Choose life... choose Star Wars... choose Disney+.
The Mandalorian premieres Nov. 12 on Disney+.
