Considering it was a CGI-dominated super-villain movie, the first Venom definitely had a semi-improvised feel (think the ET impression, or the bit when Eddie Brock launched himself into a glass case of emotions… Sorry, lobsters).

So it probably will come as no surprise to hear that the actor behind those iconic moments is getting more involved in the sequel’s story.

"Tom [Hardy] was very involved with the writing - with [screenwriter] Kelly Marcel - of the new story," Venom 2 director Andy Serkis said. "So it's very much centered around their take."

The story’s made Serkis look forward to getting on set. "I'm excited to work with all the great actors who are involved. It's a fantastic franchise," he said. "I'm really honored to have been asked to direct it. And it feels like it's a very, again, very contemporary story. And it's I think it's going to be, hopefully, a story piece of cinema."

And don’t think that because Serkis is directing the film, that he won’t pop up in it at some point - he’s still passionate about appearing in front of the camera.

"I love doing both. I absolutely love doing both," he said. "And man, it's a wonderful thing to be able to go from the intimacy of playing a single character and seeing the world through that character's point of view to stepping back and envisioning and being part of creating, you know, the whole picture."

But the film’s a while off yet. "I'm right in the beginning stages, so I've got some very clear ideas about the journey, [and what] I'd like to see visually, and how we can take the characters into another direction," Serkis said.

Venom 2 is rumoured to be drooling into cinemas on October 2, 2020. Let’s hope it doesn’t land like a t*** in the wind.
