There was a time when it was believed that TV actors do not make for successful film actors. Barring a few examples like that of a Shah Rukh Khan or an R Madhavan, there had been very few success stories as far as actors making a transition from television to films are concerned. Now, things have changed and how! In the recent times, one has seen actors like Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh, Radhika Madan and Mrunal Thakur among others getting acceptance in films after carving out successful careers on television.
Mrunal Thakur did two Marathi films (‘Vitti Dandu’ and ‘Surajya’) before making her debut in Hindi cinema with ‘Love Sonia’ (2018). The film, based on human trafficking, received widespread critical acclaim and Mrunal, who played the titular role, received accolades for her sensitive performance in the film.
Her sterling act caught the attention of mainstream filmmakers and soon, she was cast opposite Hrithik Roshan in ‘Super 30’ and later, in Nikkhil Advani’s ‘Batla House’. She got to play two starkly different characters in the two films; though the length of her roles in the two films were not as big as the one she got to play in her debut Bollywood outing, she go ample scope to show her prowess as an actor and left a strong with her performance in the two films. What is also important to note that both ‘Super 30’ and ‘Batla House’ turned out to be good successes at the box-office. Two hits in a single year is definitely a healthy success rate especially for somebody who is just starting out in her career.
In 2020, Mrunal has two big releases in the form of ‘Jersey’ and ‘Toofan’. In ‘Jersey’, which is an official remake of the Telugu super-hit of the same name, she will be seen opposite Shahid Kapoor. The character which she plays in this film was played by Shraddha Srinath in the original. ‘Toofan’ is a sports drama directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra in which she is expected to play a crucial part alongside Farhan Akhtar who is the leading man here. Apart from these two big-ticket films, she has ‘Ghost Stories’, Netflix’s anthology film wherein she will be seen in the film directed by Karan Johar. There is also ‘Baahubali Before The Beginning’, the Netflix series which will serve as a prequel to the two Baahubali films. In the show Mrunal portrays a younger version of Sivagami, the role played by Ramya Krishnan in the films.
With two important films, a keenly anticipated digital film and a huge web show, 2020 is that year where Mrunal is expected to take giant strides in her professional career!
