Two-year-old injured as a man was stabbed outside a pub at a christening

A toddler was injured after a man was stabbed outside a pub at a family christening in West Bromwich.

Masked men jumped out of a car with machetes and crowbars and stabbed a 24-year-old man multiple times, according to reports from witnesses.

Police were called to The Flower Pot pub, which is near the town centre, just before 6.40pm on Sunday.

The 24-year-old was taken to hospital with serious injuries after sustaining multiple stab wounds while the child suffered minor injuries.

The child's injuries are thought to have been caused during the incident.

West Midlands Police said in a statement: 'At this stage, it is believed that the boy was not injured with any weapons. He suffered minor cuts and abrasions, consistent with him having fallen.'

Detective Sergeant Paul Cook, from West Midlands Police CID, added: 'I understand the concerns of the community and would like to offer reassurance that we're doing all we can to establish what happened yesterday and find those responsible.

'If you saw what happened, or have any information about the incident please get in touch.'

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson added: 'We were called at 6.37pm to reports of a man who has been assaulted by a number of others; they had left scene.

'We sent an ambulance, two paramedic officers and the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car. On arrival they found a man who had been badly hurt with a large crowd of onlookers at the scene.

'A man in 20s was treated for serious injuries and taken on blue lights to hospital with the critical care paramedic travelling.'
