Boris Johnson is the overwhelming favourite to win a possible December general election, according to the bookies’ latest odds.

Several bookmakers have the Conservative Party odds-on to secure the most votes at the poll, which is expected to take place on December 12.

Marathon Bet is offering odds of 1/10 on the Tories to win the most votes, with Labour priced at 7/1 by the same bookmaker.

Ladbrokes has the Conservatives at 10/11 to secure an overall majority in the Commons compared to Labour at 20/1.

Paddypower has the Liberal Democrats and the Brexit Party at 66/1 and 100/1 respectively to win a majority.

It comes as MPs prepare for a key vote on Tuesday over Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s proposals for a December 12 poll.

The Prime Minister said a “new and revitalised” Parliament was needed to take Britain out of the European Union as he introduced legislation for a vote.

Mr Johnson has put forward a short Bill which sets aside the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act (FTPA) and enables a general election on December 12.

Mr Corbyn told his shadow cabinet he would back an early election now a no-deal Brexit was “off the table”.

His announcement came after Mr Johnson formally accepted a Brexit extension, definitively breaking his “do or die” commitment to leave the EU by October 31.

The success of the PM’s election move requires the backing of only a simple majority of MPs rather than the two-thirds “super majority” which he failed three times to win under the FTPA.

The Conservatives will go into a likely December general election with a double-digit lead in the opinion polls.

The party is currently around 15 points ahead of Labour.

It is the biggest lead the Tories have enjoyed for nearly three years.

The PA’s latest weekly poll tracker has the Conservatives averaging 38%, with Labour on 23%, the Liberal Democrats 18% and the Brexit Party 11%.
