Most trips to Costco are well-intentioned. You go in for some grocery items with a short list, but end up leaving with a wide assortment of random things you found and couldn't pass up. With numerous departments and products to choose from, a trip to Costco can have you buying fruit and planning for your own funeral, as the store sells an assortment of coffins and urns for the event. Many of these unusual Costco items fit in with what you would expect to find at the store, but some leave you scratching your head, wondering how they even wound up on the shelves. Here are a few of our favorite unusual Costco items.1 50 pounds of Pecorino Romano For the serious cheese lovers out there—who also happen to be pretty strong—Costco has the item for you. The warehouse club sells a 50-pound wheel of Pecorino Romano, made from fresh Italian sheep's milk. The cheese is then aged for seven to nine months before it's ready for consumption—massive consumption—as it weighs about as much as the average male bulldog.2 A smart mailbox There's Smart cars, smart homes, and now, smart mailboxes. Costco's Danby Parcel Guard Smart Mailbox is only available to members. It's weather-resistant, iOS and Android compatible, a motion sensor with a live stream camera, an anti-theft drop slot for packages, and has a one-year premium cloud service included. While owners might feel a bit like Big Brother, they also probably feel pretty relieved knowing their online purchases will be delivered securely.3 The Las Vegas Golden Knights signed jerseyThe Las Vegas Golden Knights have only been a professional hockey team for three seasons so far, but fans of the sport and the team are clamoring for any merchandise they can get of the newest NHL team, including this autographed jersey that Costco sells for $1,999.99. The jersey comes from the team's inaugural 2017-2018 season, when they won the Western Conference in their first year as a team and is autographed by every member of the team. The Las Vegas Golden Knights might not be everyone's team of choice, and for that, Costco has a whole section of its website dedicated to selling additional sports memorabilia.4 A very pricy ring It's been said that a prospective fiance should spend two months' salary on an engagement ring for their loved one. Going off of that, if you make nearly $2 million a year, then Costco has a perfectly-priced ring for you. The store sells a round brilliant ring with a 6.55 carat diamond, costing $329,999.99. Costco sells the rings in a size 7, and does not provide a resizing service, but said the ring is adjustable to any finger size. They also sell an assortment of rings at more affordable prices.5 D'Artagnan Spanish Mangalica Dry Cured Ham International travel is on hold for an unknown amount of time due to COVID-19, but through the Costco meat department, you can imagine you're enjoying ocean views in Barcelona while slicing into a nearly $500 cut of ham. Each 9.25 slab of meat is handcrafted by Spanish charcutiers, and require no preparation except thinly slicing it.For even more grocery store tips, be sure to sign up for our newsletter.6 Full Service Travel Medicine Consultation Program On the other hand, if you are looking to get out of town, Costco has you covered on that front as well. In a store that sells nearly everything, it only makes sense that they're trying to keep customers in tip-top health while they're abroad. The store's Full Service Travel Medicine Consultation Program, which costs $39.99, is currently only available for customers in California, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Oregon, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin. But if you live in one of those states and have ever been concerned about what vaccines you need before you travel abroad, Costco can help alleviate those anxieties.7 Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Deluxe TowerIf you're like me and you have a nightly sweet tooth, the more than 41 pieces of chocolate (and caramel popcorn) included in the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Deluxe Tower could just possibly be the answer for a few of your late night hankerings based on the huge amount of chocolate included alone. Costco sells the five-box tower for $59.99, with more than three pounds of chocolate included within. It's not just chocolate bars either—there's a wide variety included within the tower, from dark chocolate ganache squares to chocolate covered pretzels to a four-ounce piece of fudge.Read more: 30 Best Wines You Can Buy at Costco
We are just a few days away from Labor Day weekend, which means sales are either already in full swing or on the brink of starting. However, this year you may not be able to score an epic deal on a brand new electric stove as you had originally anticipated. Why? The pandemic has caused a major shortage of several home appliances. While Labor Day weekend sales historically haven't been as impressive as those offered on other holidays such as Black Friday, Independence Day, and Memorial Day, the weekend offers shoppers an opportunity to save a considerable amount of cash on more expensive items.Still, the New York Post reports that the end-of-summer blowout sale won't be as exciting this year because of the effects coronavirus has had on consumer behavior. Big kitchen appliances such as gas and electric stoves, refrigerators, and dishwashers are currently in short supply at the factory level because so many people have used their extra funds—that likely would have been spent on travel and other fun activities—to renovate and redecorate their homes. This year many stores don't have enough home appliances in stock to run promotions on.For example, GE appliances offered discounted prices on about 330 appliance models last year, but this year that number has dropped to just 25—and that's excluding washers, dryers, and dishwashers."We are spending 50 percent less on advertising this time of year than we did last year," John Carey, owner of Designer Appliances in New Jersey, told The Post. "If the manufacturers know they can't fulfill the orders, there is less incentive to try to drive sales at the dealers."Not only are people buying bigger kitchen appliances at higher than average rates this year, but the pandemic has also required factories and warehouses to operate at just 50% capacity to mitigate the spread of coronavirus."We are not over the hump yet," John Taylor, LG spokesperson said to The Post. "The shortages and high demand is expected to continue for several more months."If you want to get a great deal on a stove or refrigerator this Labor Day, you may have to travel to a large home improvement store such as Lowe's and Home Depot to do so, as both places offering a few promotions on kitchen appliances nationwide. For more, check out 15 Essential Walmart Gadgets for Literally Anyone Who Cooks.
The survival of quintessential companies like Coca-Cola is usually taken for granted, even during an unprecedented time like the coronavirus pandemic, during which many businesses are struggling to stay afloat. But the beverage giant is going through a major restructuring in order to remain strong amid declining sales, according to Restaurant Business. The company announced last week that it would be reducing the number of its business units to focus on its most popular products. The move will unfortunately result in thousands of jobs lost at Coca-Cola in several countries. However, the company is offering a buyout to 4,000 workers in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, and said it would be extending similar deals in other countries. Current job cuts could be the biggest the company has seen in two decades. After discontinuing their beloved line of Odwalla smoothies earlier this summer, the company suggested further product cuts are in the works. "We are shifting to prioritizing fewer but bigger and stronger brands across various consumer needs," chairman and CEO, James Quincey, said on an earnings call in July. However, it remains unclear which products will be directly affected by the reorganization. (Related: There's a Shortage of These Popular Beverages at Grocery Stores.)Out of the company's 400 brands, the smaller ones account for over 50% of the company's portfolio, but only generate around 2% of revenue, Quincey said. The company's new strategy will be focused on further developing products in categories with the greatest growth potential, like the Coca-Cola line, as well as sports drinks, coffees, teas, sparkling water, and plant-based milks. (A prime example: Earlier this month, Coca-Cola announced it will be debuting a new coffee-plus-soda hybrid drink early next year in the U.S.)Don't forget to sign up for our newsletter to get the latest grocery news delivered straight to your inbox. Walmart is applauded for its everyday low prices, however, there is one category of groceries you should avoid buying regularly at the grocery giant—and that's organic food. It's not that Walmart's organic produce is often recalled or lacks in quality in comparison with other brands—oftentimes it's just more expensive to buy those types of groceries there. It turns out, you can get various organic foods at cheaper price points at Aldi and even Whole Foods, recent findings suggest. The Simple Dollar provided price comparisons of various organic items between Walmart and Whole Foods. The verdict? Walmart charged more for some organic groceries than Whole Foods did for comparable items. For example, a 16-ounce jar of MaraNatha organic peanut butter is close to $5 at Walmart, whereas the same size jar of 365 Everyday Value sells Organic Creamy Peanut Butter at Whole Foods would be closer to just $4. (Related: 15 Best Foods That Pair Well With Peanut Butter).Whole Foods is often referred to as "Whole Paycheck" as its prices tend to skew higher than those at other leading competitors. The chain also sells more luxury items such as aged cheeses, craft beers, and grass-fed beef. However, in some instances (and depending on where you live), the chain may have a lower price tag on organic produce and packaged goods than Walmart.Another example is seeded bread. At Whole Foods, a 22-ounce bag of Organic Sprouted Multigrain bread may cost just $3.99, a 20.5-ounce loaf of Dave's Organic Killer Bread with whole grains and seeds costs $4.56. Five years ago, Kiplinger found that both Trader Joe's and Aldi's were found to have lower prices for organic fruits and vegetables as well as a few other items than Walmart. More recently, CNBC Make It found that out of four grocers—Aldi, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Walmart—Aldi had the best organic produce in terms of quality and price."The best place you can buy organics, and they're continuing to roll out even more, is probably Aldi," Phil Lempert, food industry analyst and editor of SupermarketGuru, told CNBC Make It.So, before you stock up on organic groceries at Walmart, check and see what other grocery stores are offering on the similar, if not the same, products. Ever since the first cases of COVID-19 were identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019, researchers have been scrambling to develop an effective vaccine. And, according to the nation's top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, by the end of the year we should know whether or not a vaccine will be ready for distribution by early 2021. Read on, and to get through this pandemic at your healthiest, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus. In a new interview with UK's The Times, Fauci revealed that the trials currently underway in the United States will rear results by November, and we should have a good idea of their safety and efficacy. "The way the pace of the enrollment is going on and the level of the infections that are going on in the United States, it is likely that we'll get an answer by the end of the year," he explained. "I would say a safe bet is at least knowing that you have a safe and effective vaccine by November, December." There are currently three vaccines lined up for testing under the White House's "Operation Warp Speed" plan, which intends to deliver 300 doses by January. "It is conceivable that we would get an answer before that," he added. He also revealed that he would be opposed to any efforts to rush a vaccine to market, especially for political purposes, citing safety reasons. "I would not be satisfied until a vaccine was proven to be safe and effective, before it was actually approved for general use," he confirmed. As for when the pandemic will be over, Dr. Fauci isn't sure. In a separate interview on the Colors podcast on Friday, he explained there are too many moving parts to make an accurate prediction. "It's something that is so difficult to predict because it—really much of it— depends on what we ourselves are doing in the sense of the public health measures necessary to contain the outbreak," he said. "Now, one of the problems is that as we've seen the most effective way to do that is to essentially shut down the problem with shutting down and staying shut down for a prolonged period of time, is that that adds to extraordinary economic instability….Now, if we, as a global community, pull together and try to reopen for those that have essentially shut down in a prudent and careful manner that doesn't allow resurgences and rebounds of cases, then we could actually do fairly well, or at least much better than the projections are now."To keep infections low, continue following the fundamentals—mask wearing, social distancing, practicing hand hygiene, avoiding crowds, and staying outdoors as much as possible. And to get through this pandemic at your healthiest, don't miss these 21 Subtle Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus.
Wearing a face mask in one of the most important methods of protecting yourself and others from COVID-19. According to the CDC, masks should be worn in public settings around people who don't live in your household and when you can't stay 6 feet away from others. Why? "Masks help stop the spread of COVID-19 to others," they explain. While most of us are well aware of the most common face mask mistakes, there is one that many of us are likely overlooking—and it could be a serious game-changer in terms of preventing infected respiratory droplets from making their way into your system or out into the world from yours. Read on, and to get through this pandemic at your healthiest, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus. The Mistake is Misusing the Slot in the InteriorMany cloth masks offer a little slot on the interior. In case you didn't know, they actually have a purpose—and if you aren't utilizing them you are making a mistake. Their purpose is to house a disposable filter, which can more effectively block respiratory droplets than wearing a cloth mask alone. Onyema Ogbuagu, MD, a Yale Medicine infectious disease specialist and associate professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine, explains to Eat This, Not That! Health that he is in favor of people using disposable filters inside face masks to prevent COVID-19 infection and transmission. "The size of the (respiratory) particles are really small, so they can easily penetrate fabrics used to make masks," he points out. "Having a filter layer embedded between the layers of cloth is smart."Research from Missouri S&T supports Dr. Ogbuagu's claims. A recent study spearheaded by Yang Wang, Ph.D., assistant professor of environmental engineering, found that some fabrics block only 10-20% of particles. However, with the help of a HEPA filter, 80-90% of particles can be blocked, making it nearly as efficient as an N95 mask. These mask filters can be purchased on Amazon and are incredibly affordable. In fact, you can order a pack of 20 for less than $12—a small price to pay for your health. The Latest CDC Mask SuggestionsLast week the CDC updated their recommendations on masks, offering a variety of suggestions. They included wearing masks with two or more layers to stop the spread of COVID-19, wearing the mask over your nose and mouth and secure it under your chin, avoiding the use of masks by those under two, people who have trouble breathing, or cannot remove the mask without assistance, and the reminder that masks intended for healthcare workers -- such as N95 respirators -- should be avoided by the general population. They also acknowledged that any mask with an exhalation valve should be avoided and that the effectiveness of fleece neck gaiters as well as face shields are still unknown. Additionally, the health organization offered explicit instructions on how to wear, wash, and take off a mask. To keep infections low continue following the fundamentals — mask wearing, social distancing, practicing hand hygiene, avoiding crowds, and staying outdoors as much as possible. And to get through this pandemic at your healthiest, don't miss these COVID Mistakes You Should Never Make.

A famed Italian steakhouse, which has hosted A-listers like President Obama, Leonardo DiCaprio, and George Clooney, has filed for bankruptcy, according to FSR Magazine.Il Mulino, a high-end Italian concept with 16 locations across New York, Long Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, Tennessee, Nevada, and Puerto Rico, revealed in a filing on July 30 that seven of its locations are declaring bankruptcy.Citing the pandemic as the culprit for the restaurant's financial troubles, co-owner Gerald Katzoff indicated that an ongoing dispute with a lender has further destabilized the company, which had received a $2.3 million PPP loan in May. The restaurant now intends to use the loan to fund operations during the bankruptcy proceedings. While six of the seven bankrupt locations still remain closed, the company hopes to reopen the doors to their restaurants as soon as possible. Katzoff noted they would use the bankruptcy "to restructure debt, seek out new financing opportunities, explore potential transactions, and liquidate claims."Il Mulino opened its first location in Greenwich Village in 1981. Owned by a family hailing from Abruzzo, Italy, the restaurant served regional Italian cuisine and was eventually sold to investors who expanded its elite dining legacy to dozens more locations in the United States and abroad. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are the ideal "any time of day" food. Hungry in the morning? PB&J is the perfect breakfast option. Need a quick packed lunch? PB&J can do the job. No matter if it's midday or midnight, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches seem to always be a great go-to. Not to mention, they're delicious. But do you know that there are quick and simple ways that you can take this trusty sandwich to the next level? We got advice from 7 experts on how to upgrade your PB&J while also fixing some common (and often overlooked) prep mistakes. From adding fresh fruit to your PB&J to warming it up on the stovetop, these tips will help ensure that you make the best peanut butter and jelly sandwich every time. And for more fun facts, check out these 9 Things You Never Knew About Peanut Butter.1 Mistake: Spreading the peanut butter on just one sideSpreading peanut butter on only one side of the bread can make your PB&J the last thing you want it to be—soggy. Thankfully, there is a quick fix to this common mistake. How to fix it: When preparing your sandwich, always be sure to spread the nut butter first on both pieces of bread, says chef&founder Mee McCormick of Pinewood Kitchen&Mercantile in Nunnelly, Tennessee. "This keeps the bread from getting soggy," McCormick says. The chef also shares that pre-toasting the sandwich bread can help give it a good crunch while making for a more durable packed lunch.RELATED: Sign up for our newsletter to get daily recipes and food news in your inbox!2 Mistake: Not warming it upIf you've never made a warm PB&J sandwich, then you, my friend, are missing out. Sure, a room temperature PB&J sandwich can easily hit the spot, but turning up the temperature dial on this sandwich classic takes it to the next level. How to fix it: Baker Chris Tucker of Betta with Butta and ABC's The Great American Baking Show advises introducing the sandwich to the stovetop to create a melt-in-your-mouth masterpiece. "If you're looking to upgrade the classic, butter the whole sandwich—like you would a grilled cheese—and slap that baby in a fry pan," Tucker says. "There's nothing better than a toasty, warm grilled PB&J!"RELATED: Your ultimate restaurant and supermarket survival guide is here!3 Mistake: Using the wrong jellyThere's a laundry list of jellies available out there, but somehow we always opt for the plain old, sugar-filled grape one—what gives? How to fix it: Ditch the store-bought jelly, which is packed with sugar and preservatives, for a simple homemade one, says Samah Dada, chef and founder of popular food blog Dada Eats. "Homemade raspberry chia seed jam is easy and simple to make, with no preservatives and [has] natural sugars," Dada says. Dada opts for raspberries when making jam, not only because they provide delicious flavor, but also because they're full of vitamins and are a great source of fiber. And if you're curious, here are 27 Things That Happen to Your Body When You Eat Peanut Butter.4 Mistake: Not adding fresh fruitBacon seems to be the go-to when the traditional PB&J needs a quick enhancement. But why not add in something that's a lot less work to prepare and a whole lot healthier, like fresh fruit? How to fix it: Meredith Haaz, chef of The Ranch 4.0, recommends tossing some fresh fruit, such as sliced apples, chopped bananas, blueberries, or pomegranate seeds, into your sandwich to add a bit more complexity. The fresh fruit provides an extra layer of taste while helping you reach that daily suggested fruit intake. "Bonus points for sautéing the apple or banana slices before adding them to the sandwich," Haaz says.5 Mistake: Only using sliced breadIf you find yourself getting a little tired of your peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, it may be because you've been prepping them with the same bread over and over and over. Shake things up, and you'll find yourself falling in love with this timeless treat all over again. How to fix it: "Skip the sliced bread and get creative," says Justin Gold, founder of Justin's. Gold recommends using rolled-up tortillas, waffles, and even pancakes in place of ho-hum sliced bread to add more excitement to your next PB&J. Extra points for turning your sandwich into an oatmeal dish or a breakfast smoothie. And if you love peanut butter, don't miss these 11 Genius Peanut Butter Hacks You've Never Thought Of.6 Mistake: Making PB&Js exclusively with smooth peanut butterWhen was the last time you made a PB&J sandwich using chunky peanut butter? If your response is "never," then don't worry, you are not alone. According to a survey done by the National Peanut Board, 56% of people prefer smooth peanut butter over chunky. However, you may want to change that, as the chunky variation has a certain edge to it.How to fix it: Switch out smooth and creamy peanut butter for the chunky variation to create the perfect balance of texture and taste. "I opt for a natural crunchy peanut butter, as they are less sweet than the processed variety and have more of a savory taste that beautifully contrasts the sweet jelly," says chef and food blogger Cilla Casey.7 Mistake: Skimping on ingredientsIf you find that when you take a bite of your PB&J, you taste mostly bread, you may need to rethink the construction of your sandwich and exactly how much of each ingredient you are putting into it. It's important to use enough peanut butter and jelly so that you can not only taste it but also feel it, says Chef Matt Bolus of The 404 Kitchen in Nashville. "Don't just put enough of each to barely cook the bread and then slap those two pieces together because what you're getting is a piece of bread with a little coating of some flavor," he says. How to fix it: Bolus suggests having an eighth of an inch to a quarter of an inch of each ingredient on each piece of bread before assembling. Now that you know these PB&J hacks, you'll have the perfect sandwich every time. For more, check out these 108 most popular sodas ranked by how toxic they are.
