Satyameva Jayate was one of the most commercially successful films of 2018. It was a film which, yet again, proved that there is a huge market for masala films which present heroes in larger-than-life avatars and are replete with punch-lines which garner claps and whistles from a large section of the audience across the country. The film featured John Abraham in a larger-than-life, heroic avatar and his ‘bone-crunching’ performance was lapped up in a huge way by the mass audience. The film, apart from pleasing the audience in the smaller centres, performed well in multiplexes in the cities as well. Now, as Satyameva Jayate 2 is due for a release later this year, there are huge expectations from the film as well.
Talking about the same, writer-director Milap Milan Zaveri says, “It is humbling to see so much excitement around the film even when it is months away from arriving in the theatres. All of us are working very hard and hope we can live up to the huge expectations people have from the film. In Satyameva Jayate, John played a vigilante who stood up for justice. If you see the posters of Satyameva Jayate 2, you will realise that this time we are trying to make a film which will be high on patriotic fervour. The tag-line of the film itself says ‘Tann Mann Dhan Se Badhkar Jann Gann Mann’. I am sure the audience will connect to John’s character instantly because of what he represents. The film explores the anger of the common man about a lot of unjust things prevailing in our country and in a way, I hope to create the impact that a Zanjeer (1973) or Krantiveer (1994) did years ago with Amit ji (Amitabh Bachchan) and Nana Patekar respectively.”
Ask him about what he has planned to ensure that Satyameva Jayate 2 turns out to be a much grander affair than its predecessor, he says, “I personally feel the lines I have written for John and Divya (Khosla Kumar) are the best dialogues I have ever written in my life. I am a huge fan of Manmohan Desai, Prakash Mehra and Mukul Anand and I am trying to pay a tribute to their style of filmmaking through this film.
Before Satyameva Jayate, John Abraham had been a part of action films like Dhoom and the Force franchise, among others but they had appealed more to the class audience. Milap’s film presented him in an unabashed, massy action-hero avatar. One would think it would have taken some effort to do that.
“Not really”, clarifies Milap. “John has always been the action hero which the audiences loved. One of his nicknames, given to him by his fans, has been ‘Action Abraham’. Yes, with Satyameva Jayate, he went full front-foot massy and I am thankful to him for having faith in me and my vision. Satyameva Jayate 2 will cater to both the single-screen and the multiplex audience but at its heart, it will be a full-on mass masala film.”
On a parting note, he declares, “The last time, John ripped a tyre apart. This time around, his bulging biceps will tear and rip apart a lot more things. Like Hulk, he will go on a rampage. This Gandhi Jayanti, I want to present to the audience with one of the most patriotic films made in the history of Indian cinema.
Satyameva Jayate 2, produced by T-Series and Emmay Entertainment, releases on 2 October, 2020.
