The successful director-actor duo, Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra and Farhan Akhtar are back with another sports drama, ‘Toofaan’. Is this tale as gripping as ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’?
Ajju Bhai - a gangster’s henchman knows how to power through street fights. His transformation to boxer Aziz Ali however, needs more than just strength and stamina. Can a reluctant coach played by Paresh Rawal train him to become a disciplined sportsperson?
Watch Now: Saina Review
A fleeting reference to Muhammad Ali and a need to find respectability in the eyes of the object of his affection played by Mrunal Thakur, inspires Ajju. Farhan Akhtar’s transformation is not just physical, he steps into the shoes of the boxer and makes an impression in the boxing ring and outside it.

The interfaith romance in ‘Toofaan’ is a parallel track that is as important as the main plot. The treatment of this Hindu-Muslim love story is predictable and there aren’t any subtleties here - it’s a stereotypical take on how every Muslim is branded a terrorist and their romance a ‘Love jihad’.
It is the performances in ‘Toofaan’ that blow you away - Farhan as the boy from Dongri might look a little too suave to play a Gully boy but he definitely belts out a commendable performance. Mrunal Thakur and Paresh Rawal are effortless playing their characters. It is the story however, that progresses at a sluggish pace and fails to strike the right chords.

‘Toofaan’ is definitely worth a watch, especially because Farhan Akhtar keeps you hooked. There are some nice moments in this film but not enough to make a lasting impression. It is 3 stars from me for this one.
