Sometimes you just need a complete break from the aches and pains of modern life.
Enter Ye Olde Bell Hotel, a homely and gorgeous lodging situated in the tiny village of Barnby Moor, Nottinghamshire, tucked away in the countryside.
It has a long and rich history, having first been built as a farm house in 1650, and many famous people have passed through its doors - from Charlie Chaplin to One Direction, even the young Queen Victoria stayed there with her mother in the now named ‘Victoria Suite’.
Its distance from large towns means that you’ll be sure to have a quiet night’s sleep with only the occasional sounds of a car driving by.
The four-star hotel has a wide variety of rooms, depending on the size of your party, and is available to host everything from weddings to conferences.
Each room is decorated lavishly with many drapes and antique furniture as an homage to its past - and the beds have the right balance between firm and soft.
Although some of the lodges may be situated outside of the main hotel building, the wifi connection is just as strong, so don’t worry about not being able to stream your favourite show.
But it’s not just the beautiful architecture that draws your attention.
In 2016, a multimillion pound spa opened on the grounds, which has proven to be a huge success, bringing in guests from all over the country.
And the reason why becomes clear once you step into the facilities.
Clearly no expense was spared for the offerings - four different types of sauna, with varying temperatures and humidity, an indoor and outdoor warm pool, foot baths, sun loungers for when you want to soak in the rays and multiple relaxation spaces to name but a few.
There is even a snow walk experience, where snow falls from the ceiling and the cold revitalises your body and can boost your immune system.
A multitude of packages are offered at various price ranges, depending on time constraints or which areas of your body you would like to focus on.
Lunch is served in a dining room adjacent to the spa, and there’s no need to change - you can have your meal in your swimsuit and dressing robe.
All the food is prepared using fresh ingredients, and everything is delicious, filling and nutritious, from the soft homemade bread served at the start to the mouth-watering deserts (the citrus tart was divine).
Every dietary requirement is catered to, just let the staff know how best to suit your needs.
At every location the personnel are welcoming and warm, ready to answer any query or problem you may encounter.
A full-day of pampering is sure to get you back on your feet, ready to face whatever the future may bring.
Know before you go
Arrive by train or car. Trains from London Kings Cross to Retford Station take about an hour and a half. Taxis cost about £20 to £22 for a round trip from the station. The hotel is minutes off the A1 and has its own free onsite parking. You can even arrive by helicopter if you wish to come in style.
Booking on weekdays. There is a slight price difference between booking the spa during or at the end of the week, and it will be busier at the weekend.
Don’t forget your swimsuit. Although the spa does have a few spares, you might otherwise find yourself on an impromptu trip to the nearby Asda.
